No he wasnt. That was the problem. He couldn't hold his drink.

Rono only beat Ovett earlier because Ovett was not well practiced at running beyond his best distances.
Quit while you are behind. Ovett had a better kick than Rono but you know very little about the sport. You don't even have a clear notion of what a tempo run is.
Clearer than you though. Rono was floating most of those races. They were not all hard races.
Do you even run,bro?

In 1982 while hung over, he ran a 27:29 10000 meters to beat Salazar. That's amazing.
is this a joke ???
look up Komen's last 400 in his 7'20.67 & compare to average pace !!!
even-pace for 3k is ideal for all !!!
no
it means he got rubbish pacing & not ideal even-pace after pacer quit, probably due to absurd racing schedule & ridiculous "fartlek" on bends/straights which just throws away buckets of secs
because at least 3 of them, the 3k / 3kSC/5K in '78 were college meets !!!
there was no pacer !!!
his 10k in Vienna was run probably in front of a 1/2-dozen drunks who got thrown out of the opera house & found a bar at local track meet
go fetch Komen-7'20.67 last lap
you won't manage, so i'll tell you :
his last 2 of 200s were :
29.6
29.5
for 7'23.25 pace for last 400 !!!
of course, he was already wrecked by "tired" 13'00++ in his legs from just 44 hours earlier & in rieti, the wabbit likely killed him with opening 200s of :
28.1 !!!
29.5 !
for opening 400 of 57.6 was 7'12.0 pace !!!
no
it is 100% likely Roo wouda gone quicker at even-pace
thanks for nothing
I have said for a dozen years that ovett in '78 couda run probably
~ 3'28-flat
his 400 was likely
~ 1'42.5
above
his thrashing by 4s earlier in season tells us he couldn't !!!
no matter how much you want to ignore it, no one thought ovett stood a chance in that 2 mile because he'd already been thrashed by 4s over 3k earlier in season on same track !!!
no
the 4s thrashing shows he couldn't when both with rested legs
Rono thrashed him by 4s over 3k
Rono thrashed him by 4s over 3k
utter drivel
Rono thrashed him by 4s over 3k in a 7'43

on 24th May '78 he gets hammered by Henry over 3k by 4+s !!!
on 15th September, he beats Henry
ovett ran no distance longer than 2k, a semi-impressive 4'57.8, during that period, so what practice did he have for going to pawn-pusher to kasparov in 3 months ?!
He was a quick study and figured out what he needed to do after the first 3k race.

Ovett seemed to think he had a chance. That's the only person who needs to think he had a chance.
Ovett's 1978 racing season can be found at

.
Note that malmo raced Ovett over 1500m in 1978, and so had a first-hand look at Ovett's kick then. I don't know if he took a crack at Rono as well that season.

Yup. I was 7th in that 1500 in Oslo. I strated off slowly then worked my way up. With 300m to go I had pulled even with a wall of 6 runners. Just when I started to launch my kick....so did they. I had a front row seat. It was unbelievable. Overt ran the final 300m in 37.0. I ran something like 42.1 and was blown out of the stadium!
As far as Rono goes, yes I raced him in Helsinki. Maybe seven of the top ten steeplechasers in the world in the field. Rono cruised in the back until 3 laps to go when he suddenly puts his foot on the pedal and blows by the entire pack and never looks back.
Ovett was only 3/4 fit at that time.
If peak Ovett had abandoned the blue riband mile to step up to the the failed milers distance he would have ruled over 5000m
Rono is lucky Ovett didn't practice a few hurdles and then smoke him in the steeple too.
Ovett was a superb junior long-jumper and could have easily done the whole race and kept his shoes dry.
