it's not going to "burst" (yet), but the emergency spillway they turned on yesterday is already about to fail. I should post all the officials who a few days back assured us evacuation would not be needed.
Note: the dam itself is still intact, but no one really knows for how long. Probably it will stand, but all bets are off at this point. (The extent of wear-and-tear over the decades is completely unknown, of course.)
Don't want to see any loss of life or suffering, but could this be a clear sign
that the State of CA has gone too far on
Satan's side with all those lefty liberal commie leaning democrats. Not too mention the sodomites. Repent now and get on the Trump train to " Make America Great Again".

My thoughts exactly. No federal recovery funds for them. Let their illegals stick a finger in the dyke, oops sorry Rosie O,'D!
California is one of the few states that pays more to the Federal gov than it receives. But you know, dont let facts get in the way..
Wikipedia already updated: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oroville_Dam
fake news. Dam not failing
since it was built the emergency spillway has never been exceeded until last saturday and now it's buckling, eroding and spewing water, the dam is the tallest in the US, if it breaks it will wash california away!
the failure of the auxilary spillway [after the main had already failed] does in fact put the entire structure in some risk.
especially given the weather forecast [up to 4" in the next storm, arriving wed]
The US ARMY Corp of Engineers strikes again. Didn't they learn nothing from Hurricane Katrina?
DAM YOU OBAMA!!
either blow the dam thing out already and get it over with or send in a troop of beavers from Maine they make good dams
First the flood, then the mudslides, then the earthquakes, the Raiders move to Las Vegas, the Chargers bolt SD to LA, Hollywood turns into ZombieLand, Jerry Brown blames Global Warming, taxes go up,North Korea blows up San Fran, Clint Eastwood makes another western, and Nordstrom stops selling anything made in the USA. Sure signs that end is not far.
...and you guys want to build a wall where? LOL!
Not George Bush's fault!

The dam will not fail. The emergency spillway is to the side of the dam. The dam won't burst. But the emergency spillway could get undermined and create a new shallow river canyon down the side emergency side slope. There is bedrock below the soil so that will help keep the new spill canyon for getting to deep. But at that point the amount of water being let out is too great for the river to manage and the towns below will get flooded.

Not true. The dam will hold. But the problem is the emergency spillway creating a new river path.
Any geologist knows the rivers often change course when floods occur, or silting clogs a path and the river finds an easier way to continue. Another dam would have to be built where the emergency spillway is to fix the problem if a new river canyon is built; which is what is going on now.
Water level has dropped from about 2 feet over the top of the emergency spillway to 0.2 feet. Flow over that feature will stop soon. Water will continue to flow out to reduce the level to manage a new storm coming mid-week.
Yeah, that don't get any knock-on benefit from the 38 military bases and all the defense contractors there.
F-em. Turn the whole place back over to Mexico, frI'm whence it came.
