Having lived in many parts of this country (and overseas), and coming from a working-class background, I can tell you that Bernie would almost certainly have lost the popular vote--handily--as well as the electoral. Yes, broad swaths of the electorate were not ready to vote for a woman; even more were (and are) not ready to vote for an atheist and/or socialist and/or Jew.

I actually agree with your reasoning which is why I didn't vote for Bernie in the primary.
But I thought the Dem candidate would be facing Rubio or Jeb, not Trump.
With Trump there, it became about personality and likability.
Bernie was more broadly likable than Trump while hate for Hillary brought some out to vote that otherwise wouldn't have cared about Bernie.
There always was great dislike of Trump.
