Why do people do 50+ miles a week when they can't break 18:00 in a 5k? Because of Runners world garbage?
Because if they keep doing it. They will

Agree. I know a girl who is "training" for a 10k on like 20 mpw and one day is intervals..
Well that's better than 20 miles plodding
The number one thing most recreational runners could do to be better or faster is to lose weight. Everything is doesn't matter when you are fat.

that is exactly how it works. what you dont understand is that running
running less than 50miles they maybe wouldnt even break 19 or 20
If "speedwork" means something close to target pace, it makes sense. Or should they run easy every day and discover what running hard means on race day?
Some people just like to run and be part of a community of people that is like minded. And if chafing it up about speed work or intervals etc... is the topic then have at it! For me, I average about 25 mpw. I am a 44 yo female mother/wife with a job. I do a weekly 'speed' or interval or whatever it might be to break up the monotony of putting the miles in. I have goals and one is to be faster! I am 5'2" and 110. I can get faster on my measly 25 mpw (fitting that in is hard enough these days) and 1 speed workout session. And if it only helps mentally then so be it! Be happy those 50lb overweight people are trying and they maybe need the community of running to chat with. Not all of us are BQ or 5K elitests. Give that next runner a high five and say good job.
I am happy for you, Smoove, -and your goals. And I am happy for the rest of those posting on there! It's great we are all like minded and love running!
I started back running in 2016 after a 12 year layoff. And I wasn't fast at 21 when I quit 17:20.. I ran miles up to 70mpw and basically never to rarely ran under 7 a mile. And ran 17:45 in November . So how could other hobby joggers not break 20 running more miles ?
Apologies for my stupid typos too! Geez!
Boom. This thread is, for all reasonable people, done.
I don't think that is part of the discussion though. The discussion would be if you wanted to get faster would you be better off doing those 25mpw w some speedwork or just doing 40mpw.
True. Some of the posts I read, however, were seemingly making fun of those trying and I just had to put my two cents in! On a relevant note, is your opinion that a speed workout would improve my speed or someone like me based on a 25 mpw average? TIA
More miles does not make you raster. If it were true marathoners would kick ass in the 800m
Old wives tale at people seem to now believe
Yeah, I didn't get that it was neccesarily making fun of those trying, more to the point of the misinformation out there about training methods with some recreational joggers. On my point. I am friends on fb w a "certified" running coach. Her husband starting running on jan 1 and she posted about an interval workout today w him.. whhhhhhhy?! That's dumb.. I think thaTs more the op point. I may be wrong. I usually am.
I appreciate your comments! Thanks:)
And I agree, an interval run for a complete newbie as of Jan. 1 is dumb not to mention he may get injured! He may have a very athletic background however it is still questionable!
What a dumb thread. Varying the pace is the right thing to do at any volume
Really STUPID thread 😕 I'm in my mid--50s, 10-15 lbs over my ideal running weight and not built at all like a typical dimuinitive elite runner, run 15 mpw & one speedwork or road TT session. Been running for 30 years now. Speedwork or TTs can dramatically improve the CV system and stroke volume, lower RHR, improve METs score, etc. It's also euphoric and helps with stress management. People don't need to run a certain amount of mileage or be a particular weight to enjoy the benefits of speedwork, both physically & mentally.
I use to race a lot in my younger years but got tired of throwing my money away on local races that charge an arm and a leg to just get a cheesy finisher's ribbon and maybe a cup of Gatorade 😂 Fitness running can be just as fulfilling as competitive running, though some of those dimuinitive anorexic-looking elites, who will get old themselves someday, love to characterize us as "hobby joggers"...go figure ðŸ˜
Didn't you read the book OP? "Run Less Run Fatter".
Igloo had us doing 30 220s to train for 5k.
What is the threshold that separates a "hobbyjogger" from a "sub-elite" runner?
