I live in Houston and the last few mornings have been relatively pleasant. Today it was 88% humidity and about 68 degrees. Compared to summer when it can be 82 for the low and 98% humidity, it really isn't too bad.
But if it has been cool then you are not acclimated. Plus how many people come to run the race from far colder places where the change in conditions are going to be even more dramatic?
Because it is way easier to speed up than to slow down?
Because it is safer?
Because telling someone to run faster is likely to cause them to have a worse performance?
Because speeding up creates more body heat?
Why didn't you ever run fast enough to qualify for the Olympics if all you had to do was speed up?
Just got out of the elite technical meeting. Not once was I told to "slow down".
From the tech. meeting:
Men's Half Marathon pacer: 28'00 through 10km (59'05 pace)
Men's marathon pacer: 64'00 through HM
Women's marathon pacer: 2h21-23 pace
Women's half: Missed that one
Rupp is not a pansy! There's no way he would back out because of weather. My Opinion is Boston is more important to him and he needs to heal up.
Rupp doesn't need LR or basement trollers. Seriously, he doe. It need to prove himself and for whatever reason he chose to withdraw, it is legit!
nothing a little bit of pure hate can't fix

Of course another solution might be to speed up and finish before it gets too hot.
I wish you guys would stop this crap and open a seventh grade science book before you post something so inaccurate.

Says the guy who needs to open up a seventh-grade English book. Ummm...ever heard of a compound adjective? Hint - it needs to be hyphenated.

No worries. I already corrected them in the 9th post.

Sounds like they're going with the rojo plan.
You either blow up in this heat and thing your friends actually buy the excuse, or choose a different race and lay down a respectable time.
I know which one I pick.

To be fair, meteorologists do a terrible job explaining humidity to the public. Relative humidity % is usually as a stand alone value. It is almost impossible to find the dew point forecast on the local news, weather.com , etc.

What exactly does that have to do with the context of my post?

Exactly, but there still is no excuse for taking the highest temp of the day and the highest humidity of the day and lumping them together.

I read the warnings, saw the temperature forecast and said "pshaw!"
I did the full. It felt really nice plus full cloud coverage the whole way and was feeling great and ahead of my goal at the half. The problem was that with the high humidity my sweat didn't evaporate, and although I felt comfortable most of the way, my core was overheating. I hit the wall big time, and the doc at the medical area said I was at 104 (rectal thermometer - arrgh!). I was also deceived into thinking I was getting enough fluids, but was really becoming dangerously dehydrated. I took a liter of IV, and 80 ounces of gatorade while lying on the stretcher. I learned my lesson!

You also went out too fast if you were ahead of your goal.
