"Whilst." People use it instead of while for no reason other than to sound smart.
Side note: No one has ever used "superfluous" except when referring to a third nipple.

How about "protocol?" You can use it for any situation or thing!!
"peculiar" Bullshit peculiar.
I find use of the term "fly-over" to describe non-coastal cities and states to be extremely pretentious and self-important. Important people who do important things in important places would never be caught spending time in fly-over country!

I never discussed the appropriateness of their word choices. It's the same thing.
No it's certainly not. Pretentiousness is judgement call that requires you a cast some decision about someones behavior.
A lie a lie, or it isn't.

I find this thread to be shallow and pedantic.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yetwdpsiM8QPretty simple, guy.
Do people ever try to use words to make themselves sound more intelligent than they are?
If so, what do you think is most common to reach such ends?
Nothing pretentious about acknowledging reality.

You have no clue if their word choice is due to this 'goal' of sounding deceptively intelligent. You're just assuming. At the end of the day its usually just intellectual insecurity that makes people put other down for silly stuff like this.
Misogynistic
Xenophobic
Bigot
Racist
Basically all the words which were thrown out in rapid succession during the Trump campaign as if they all were the same thing or part of some great whole. People love using these brand new sparkly words on a daily basis to reaffirm their intelligence and absolute moral high ground
The word needs to be pretentious enough that you want to punch the person in the face who uses it.
libation
(smack)
ostentatious
You still don't get it and keep projecting. Why don't you answer my question?
I find it really annoying when people say "last" when they could just say "post-penultimate."

You really have no clue? How can you be that blind, dupable, ignorant, inexperienced, unworldly, thoughtless, literal, and pedantic, etc?
Thusly
Consequently
Therefore
Whence
Shewn (instead of shown)
Copacetic
And all other sybaritic, licentious sesquipedalian lexical rudiments.

Sure,
What's the point of ragging on people for word choice. If you understand what they are saying then they have been an effective communicator.
Any mocking of someone for these things is just an attempt to appear smarter/more 'in the know'/etc -- pretentiousness.

I'm sure that people do choose words to sound smarter than they really are.
However, you have no idea if/when people are doing this. You can only assume. This judgement call itself is the issue I take with all this. You're making yourself the arbiter of the intelligence-vocabulary scale. It's a needless bit of intellectual masturbation. If you feel the desire to mock others' language then you probably should have spent some more time in English class yourself.

I'll openly admit that I can't read minds and therefore won't haphazardly ascribe deceptive intent to something as silly as word choice.
