Weldon has recently encouraged me not to ask liberals to explain things or to lavel people. I used the term intellectuals/left as in the US the pro-immigratin stance would be considered to be a democratic ideal. However, the left would probably not be for a burqa ban so it's an interesting thing to discuss.People don't like wars, but the fact of the matter is when we don't get involved in the middle east when a war breaks out, these are the consequences.

Why because a friend of mine says he has two friends who are non runners but come to the messageboard every week several times as there is no where else for this type of discussion.
Everyone lives around like minded people, watches like minded tv (fox for the GOP, msnbc for the dems) and don't learn from the other side.
What's wrong with debate/hearing the other side?
I really sometimes have a hard time understanding the intellectuals / left.
For months, Americans on the right have been lectured during the campaign that they are bigots if they don't want Islamic refugees coming in from overseas. Contrast that to Germany, where Chancellor Merkel staked her entire political career by saying she wanted them in huge numbers.
Now , Merkel is saying she wants to ban the burka?
Doesn't her shift basically support the notion that it would just be a hell of a lot easier to not take them in the first place? I mean seriously. She's basically now saying, "We'll take you but not if you practice your religion as you want to. You have to practice it the way we want you to."
Good post. I've been reading up on it. I really enjoyed this article.
http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/why-has-angela-merkel-staked-her-legacy-on-the-refugees-a-1073705.htmlSo young Merkel was simultaneously brainwashed in both Christianity AND communism? And we wonder why she is confused and irritating?
You've just asked the wrong people to explain these personal points of view. Merkel is the only one that truly knows why she is taking whatever stance she is taking.
As I alluded to under a different name above, you just have decided Merkel is a liberal because she is accepting refugees; something you don't like/think is wrong. Then when she puts forwards some secular ideas you are left all confused.
And the people trying to prove that Merkel's communist father/history means she is a liberal are actually insane. You really need to read a book some time. Liberalism and communism are extremely different. Especially when it comes to fiscal policy and economic ideologies. Just so far apart it is unreal to suggest they have any bearing on each other at all.
Once again Letsrun posters, liberal does not mean: people you (35y+ White American Republican) don't like/think hold 'anti-American' views.
Merkel a leftist?
Please.
There is no where else for this type of discussion. It is not nice to lavel people because of their pro-immigratin stance.Well done rojo.

The right's stance of anti-intellectualism is embarrassing and scary.
...
It's not scary. It's the logical reaction to what's happened. The intellectual elite on the left have used their credentials and their positions of authority and power to push their agenda, and in the process many people have lost faith in them and the institutions they represent.
It is truly embarrassing how the intellectuals have thrown away their credibility, but that was their choice and now they live with the consequences. It will not be easy to build it back up.
Did they really think they could distort, lie, mock, and bully without consequences? They deserve no respect.

A far more blatant sign is talking about 'they'. 'They' have done this and 'they' have done that and nobody respects 'them'. Who? Vagueness is a sin that people like yourself (and Trump) employ to fear monger and stereotype when you don't actually have anything to say. As do the people on that forum I hinted at. It's much less about racism and much more about ignorance and the Politics of Fear.
Angela Merkel is on the right. And it makes no sense to me.
and she is definitely no intellectual.
Your enemies are the Muslims, the immigrants, the border hopping Mexicans, the D.C. politicians, the big businesses, a powerful government, the liberals, millennial culture 'the intellectuals'....
They, them... who?
Vague enemies to be defeated. The Snowballs of modern America. Use them to make the people overlook the life they have around them, the day to day problems they face.
