lol....4:30 half-miles would be pitiful. but, still faster than pam reed at a dead sprint.
but he said him pam reed and a mountain lion.
the only one he has to outrun is pam reed.

she went on a really long walk.
great, people have done that before.
Reinhold Messner crossed the antarctic, on foot by himself.
pam reed...well she just walked.
Jeesh Nobby, just relax. I don't care that you don't agree, and I don't care about Pam Reed. I was just throwing out some comments. You have worked yourself into a tither, and are attacking me personally, which shows that you are running out of arguments to defend your point of view. And as far as those personal attacks go, you claim that I am a " still a "nobody" in any competitive milieu". To quote you from your last repsonse to somebody else: "how do you know??" You don't! And, as a matter of fact, you are wrong. At 15 years of age(probably younger) I could beat Pam Reed in her prime like a drum in any event from 100m to the marathon, and likely in longer races. I could probably have beaten you like a drum too(and likely still could), but I really have NO IDEA who you are, so I won't make such a definitively asinine statement as you did. But this is not about my running (though you tried to make it so), or yours, it is about Pam Reed running/walking 300 miles. I think it is amazing that she did it. But there are LOTS of "amazing" things that people do I don't necessarily respect nor would ever want to emulate. Her walk-run fits into this category for me.Now my turn for a personal attack (but it is based on your statements in our debate, not about something I nothing about in your life): Your comment of......

And against serious women ultrarunners, and in the history of ultrarunning (a far longer and more competitive history than just marathoning) Paula Radcliffe is a NOBODY. You are comparing apples to oranges
...is one of the stupider comments I have read on here in a long time. You said that "ultra-running", as a SPORT, has a "far longer and MORE COMPETETIVE history than just marathoning." HA HA HA. Wow, you've gone off the deep end on this one. Ultra-running has always been, and will always be, a FRINGE sport, period. Marathoning has been one of the most competetive oganized SPORTS around for a century plus. And don't waste your time to find some info on ancient, original ultra-runs, or something like that. Fine, people in every age ran long distances. Sometimes they likely ran about a marathon distance probably, but it was not called that at the time. Other times they ran longer. Whatever. Are there WELL-DOCUMENTED records of performances and times in these ancient "ultra-runs" to which we can compare today's times?? Was there some amount of mass participation (after all, it was "competitive sport, right???) ? There have been walking races for ages too. I don't care. And if you simply say ultra-running races have been around for centuries in some form, I will then counter that the Original Marathon was run Millenia ago. Then the discussion is absurd. We are talking about ORGANIZED, DOCUMENTED, OFFICIAL SPORTS.
The '5-20 meter dash' has been around since the first person took a step. People just didn't bother recording times, but every day someone somewhere challenged someone else to a race ( "I can beat you from here to there"). Oh what a great, and rich history exists in the '5-20 meter dash'. I could kick Pam Reed's ass in a 5-20 meter dash I bet.
And as far as your comments on Paula Radcliffe.......they are PURE IDIOCY. Has Paula Radcliffe attempted a 100-300 mile race?? No. Has Pam Reed attempted marathons??? YES. So my comment about Pam Reed being a nobody in marathons is based on her mediocre performances there, but your comments about Paula Radcliffe is because she has NO INTEREST in being in a fringe, non-competitive, walk-run. I am sure there are people who can dribble a baskeball longer than Larry Bird, Jordan, and Magic combined. Are they better hoops players than those legends????? Of course not. And Bird, Jordan, and Magic are certainly nobodies in the realm of ultra-dribbling. I am sure they care.
My comparison of marathons to ultramarathons maybe comparing apples to organges. But your comparison of Paula Radcliffe to Pam Reed is like comparing an atomic bomb to a firecracker. I will let you figure out which is which.
what no comeback calhoun..???

She followed the rules which she laid out beforehand, 300 miles without stopping.[quote]
Since you weren't there either, how do you know she didn't stop? And don't be silly. Of course she did; she wasn't wearing an astronaut suit.
True records require impartial observers with stopwatches. No "record" set with only the participant and his/her crew present is worth anything. "Take my word for it, really" doesn't work.
Here's to Sir Lance-alot. Some of the best quotes (and points) I've ever seen on this site. Keep 'em coming!

Thanks my friend!
And not to pat myself on the back, but.....(ok I will do it anyway),
You know, as soon as I completed that post, I thought to myself, "and Nobby, I just dropped an A-bomb of reasoning on your house-of-cards logic with that post."
:-)
Anybody else seeing the irony here? (by the way, tither means "a person who collects tithes", so I'm not exactly clear what I have worked myself into but if it involves someone giving me money, I'm all for it.)
Actually I do. If you had achieved anything in your life, you wouldn't dismiss Pam Reed's achievement as you do. Ergo you are a no-class nobody.
You just got through saying that Pam Reed is a nobody, now your claim to fame is that you could beat her? A 15 year old guy beating a 40 year old woman! Call USATF, we've found the Athlete of the Year! (Exactly how many marathons did you run as a 15 year old?)
Yes. Comrades has been 56 miles since before Boston was 26.2 and gets more than 12,000 starters every year. Ever heard of Arthur Newton? London to Brighton has been going for 55 years.
"World Records" for ultra distances have been kept since the 1800's. Ever heard of the "Astley Belt" races? Six day races first held in 1879. What about Captain Barclay (64 miles in 10 hours 1802)? George Cartwright? Emil Antoine? Carl Brockmann? Harold Ross? Donato Pavesi? Hardy Ballington? Wally Hayward? Why don't you do some homework before you show yourself to be a complete dumbarse?
I think you need to lie down for a while in a darkened room. Multiple punctuation is a sure sign of impending mental breakdown.
It all comes down to the fact that each of us enjoy running in different ways. Some of us like to run hard on the track, other enjoy challenging themselves in a marathon while others are into trail running or ultra marathoning.
Pam Reed set out to challenge herself at a distance she felt was something she wanted to accomplish. I am sure Pam Reed has run everything from a 5K to a marathon in her time.
There is really no need to belittle her because she set out to accomplish a very personal goal. We all have personal goals and THATS ALL IT IS since none of us on here are talented enough to chase american or world records for that matter. So the rest is about self accomplishment.
Why cant people accept that???
"and Nobby, I just dropped an A-bomb of reasoning on your house-of-cards logic with that post."
:-)
Not to be obtuse, but making shit up and posting it isn't reasoning.
Boasting about beating a 40 year old woman doesn't cast you in as good light as you might think (put it this way, I've never heard Paul Tergat boast about beating a 40 year old woman "like a drum". Have you?).
Crawl back under your rock Prance-a-lot, you are an uneducated, jealous moron.
I think a lot of people are just pissed off that Dean and Pam are getting stories on 60 minutes and Geb/Meb/Webb aren't. There is no news in someone running a fast 10k. Someone runs a fast 10k every year. Not many runners have even tried to run 300 miles, nor do many even attempt the Badlands race. The story with Pam and Dean is two-fold. One, they both want to try and run 300 miles. Pam is the "nice girl", Dean is the "ass hole" so they build it up like a competition between the two because Pam has won a couple races and beaten all the guys like Transon did a time or two. I couldn't fathom running 100 miles, much less 300 miles. I don't care if you're running 7 minute miles or 10 minute miles as long as you are running for that far you've got my vote as a bad ass.
Alan
Face it Nobby you have been put into the popcorn machine by Sir Lance...
The only reason Pam is doing ultras is because she sucked at the Marathon.. and yes a 3hr marathon for a woman does suck if you want to be competitive...
So now big Pam has found a sport she is good at.. Yahoo!
Loser!
This media attention is only belittling the true sport of running... Yes Americans suck at running, so the media has to go off on some ugly tangent to prove to the world that America doesn't suck at running...
How pitiful we are..
What a piece of crappy journalism and reporting...
Next thing you know the media will start reporting on those beer miles we love so much...
BWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I think it's funny that the people who are bashing a 300 mile (or 100 mile for that matter) race have likely not even ran farther than 20 miles so they have NO IDEA what happens to your legs after 2 or 3 hours of running. They have NO IDEA what that kind of muscle damage does to you. NO IDEA.
..and you have "NO IDEA" what it feels to eat 60 hot dogs in 10 minutes
and yes a 3hr marathon for a woman does suck if you want to be competitive...Oh great, another retard. Sub-3 for a Master's woman will get you top 10 in the category at any major marathon in the world. She would have picked up $3,000 at Boston last year. Get a clue.
yes, but please do me the favor and don't compare boston with st. george...
get a clue loser!
That's right...Boston was 85 degrees last year. Pam's kind of weather. Unfortunately, Boston is a much harder course than St. George. She ran her P.R. in St. George...a 2:59 something. If she would cut her mileage I bet she'd be able to pull off a 2:55 somewhere. She's trashing her body.
Running that slow can't be good for you.

That hot dog eating guy is a pussy. I could do that, I just choose not to. Anyone could do that, it's not an accomplishment.
Just wondering, why hasn't ultra gal weighed in on this retarded debate? maybe its because she has spent the last several days running 300 miles? ...just sayin'.
