Should I have picked it up? I saw 5 cents on the ground today as I was walking across the parking lot to a department store. I didn't pick it up because I thought it wasn't worth my time.

You are probably smart and rich. Or both.
It takes 2 seconds to pick up a nickel. If you do the math on this there are 3600 seconds in an hour. So 3600/2 X .05 = $90.
So if you make more than $90/hour it wasn't worth your time. If you make less than that, you should have grabbed it.

But I was out shopping, not working at my job.
Cyclists are too inflexible to pick stuff up. Maybe you should buy a recumbent so you can collect spare change that way?
You made the right call. I once saw 25 cents on the ground and bend to pick it up. Turned out that someone had glued it to the ground and was filming the people who would stop to try pick it up. Turns out, I wasted my time and ended up being portrayed unfavorably in a youtube video montage that went viral at my school.

Did the school set up a safe zone for you ?
