I was in the first open corral at the NYC marathon this weekend. It's getting close to start time and we're still being held ~100 ft from the start line. At first, I just assumed they were giving the elite runners some room to get loose. Then out of nowhere, 300 people file into the chute. In front of our corral. My first assumption was that they moved the sub-elite corral to our chute, but I immediately notice that just about every one of these turds has headphones, cameras, etc. Then the gun goes off and they hold us for 90 seconds to give the joggers a head start! That way, we get to dodge these turds across the entire Verrazano Narrows bridge. I don't care how much they paid for the privilege to start up there, that shit was stupid and dangerous. I lived in NYC for a while and I was a big fan of NYRR, but someone up high these days is making some dumb decisions.

Same. I don't know if it was 300 but I had to dodge a lot of hobbyjoggers. Some were talking selfies in the middle of the verrazano bridge.

I would like to run a big city marathon someday but the prices and the stupid crap they pull really just make them a total waste of life. It's bad enough you have to drop 200+ dollars just to sign up for the race itself and have to get a hotel for the weekend which can run almost $1,000. Then they go and pull a stunt like that?! I was totally shocked (though I'm not really sure why seeing as how every race nowadays does something totally stupid like this) watching the replay of the race. The catering to the masses is just sickening and racing in this country is done. Everything is an "event" now. Even your local ho-dum 5k with 100 people is for some stupid charity and they want to hand out t-shirts and medals to everyone. When did distance running turn into the f*cking prom? I want some resemblance of a sport back.

This is one reason why I started doing masters track races during the spring and summer. No crowds, small fees, good competition and always accurate course! My dollar limit is $25 for 5k when I want a road 5k and I don't expect much so if it's accurate and has some competition then that's gravy.

I was there. It was ridiculous. To make it worse many of these hobby joggers, including one group of about 5-6 linebacker looking dudes, were running shoulder to shoulder creating a virtual roadblock.
It was also ridiculous how we were crammed into the corral like sardines and forced stand for a solid 35-40 minutes before the race started with no access to water, toilets, etc. And this was all after having to wake up at 5:00 to take the subway, then a ferry, then a bus, to Staten Island.

Every year NYFD/NYPD & friends (you just need the shirt) seperate elites from first pen at main start. I think there are 3 starts and at least one has an well-organized local elite pen. It is always a stressful start for non-elites: hard to get to, crowded, confusing to first-timers, long wait, etc.
In defense of NYRR, they work really hard to improve race features for the runners every year, and given the incredible amount of police support to put this race on safely each year, I think it is worth giving them some spots up front.

If you are a serious runner, you should NOT race NYC, Chicago, Boston etc unless you are being paid an appearance fee. Instead you should do CIM or Grandmas
The big race marathons including the rock N Roll turds R Us series should be just left for the pros and cell phone camera equipped turdjoggers
