Sure you got that sub 3, and sure that raising money is harder. That's why you have legions of charity runners only raising for Boston and nothing else, hmmmm. Because it's a lot easier than putting their heads down and working for it.
There are legions of charity runners who do Boston because they couldn't get in any other way. Is that your point? So what. Still doesn't diminish the good work they do. They work very hard to participate. Most don't have a fitness background and if you knew some of them you'd think it was impressive they could run (jog) at all, let alone 26 miles. Many start out clueless about endurance, nutrition and running generally. I agree some of the self promoters are annoying, but that's not limited to charity runners.
