The number of teachers having sexual relations with students is way up over the last five years. Right now we are at about one new student/teacher sexual relationship per school day. Many people are blaming the increase on teachers having social media connections with students. Some schools already have bans on teacher/student electronic communications and many others are looking into it.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. I hate the idea of banning technology, but I also don't think a teacher should be buddies with their students.
How do you feel?
More teachers are having sex with students. Should teachers be banned from friending students?

I had an English teacher that I'd gnaw my right arm off for 10 minutes alone with her.
Never happened and I'm still sad. -
Is it actually going up, or are teachers getting caught more frequently?
Regardless, I feel it's totally inappropriate for a teacher to interact with students via social media.
When I was 22, I volunteered with the guy's XC team at my old high school. The girls probably thought I was cold because I didn't talk to them, I didn't friend them on Facebook, and I largely acted as though they didn't exist. I was young, fit, and attractive as were many of the older girls. I had zero interest in even having the SLIGHTEST appearance of something inappropriate.
You can't trust yourself. It's human nature, and society has set strict boundaries that can never be crossed. I think teachers should stay as far from that line as possible. -

I working in high schools in the early 90s from about my junior year of college until I was about 28. There were definitely girls who would flirt with younger teachers/coaches. But back then, I did not have a cell phone and had to go to the public library to check my email. Any girls who would want to flirt with me would have to either do it in plain view of other students (which is suicide in high school) or find a moment to catch me when other student were not around (very rare if ever). I cannot imagine what it is like now with social media and smart phones. I think a lot of illicit relationships are now starting up thanks to how easy it is to flirt clandestinely and without actually having to find a way to corner the teacher (or student) when no one is around. Also back in the 90s, I had a camera that used film. Video cameras were the size of a shoe box. Now, you can just take your smart phone and go wild. I would not be surprised at all if there are more illicit relationship today.
I would have no problem banning student teacher contact on social media. That would at least reduce the temptation. But there are so many ways to make contact outside of facebook, etc. -
Any teacher who friends students or spends time alone with them is an idiot.

If I set out to become a teacher now, do you think I can get hired and bang some young girls before we have a nation-wide ban on teachers friending students?

Is this post for real?! Where is your data on this? I have not noticed a higher rate of teacher/student relationships. I'm a high school coach and I interact with my students on social media all of the time. It's an important communication tool. I'm not a teacher but I know many teachers who use social media in this way. There's nothing inappropriate about it if you don't have inappropriate intentions. Can't even imagine it! To the "volunteer coach" higher up on the thread...please don't coach. It sounds as if you were not able to relate to the girls at all because they were attractive to you. Also, I doubt they were attracted to you. Get over yourself.

I have no idea whether the premise is true, but it's a bad idea for a teacher (at any level) to interact with students (on any level) through social media. I do not "friend" any of my undergraduate students until they're done being students and I no longer have any kind of authority over them.

Kids don't use the Facebook. They are on Instagram, Snap Chat and stuff I don't care to find out about.
No adult should be sending snaps or commenting on photos of minors. That's a big red flag.
