Howling Wolf,
I would definitely contact the coach. As a coach, I would want to know about these behaviors & would address it appropriately. If things are not corrected, go to the athletic director and/or principal.
I try to run with the kids every day, but it only gives me LIMITED contact with them (because all the kids run at different paces). I try to do out-and-back routes that allow me to see the kids a couple of times during a run. BUT, I do know where all the kids are & failure to run the correct route, pace, etc. can result in disciplinary actions.
I actually put the following in my Team Handbook:
Coaches will have knowledge of where all student-athletes are at all times. There will be times that coaches will NOT have direct eye contact of student-athletes running. During these times, you are expected to obey “Safety Precautions for On-Road Runningâ€* AND be on your best behavior at all times (including, but not limited to, running the correct route, running with the correct group, running the correct pace, not walking, etc). Failure to behave in the expectations of the cross country program will result in disciplinary actions.**
I also include a Safety Precautions for On-Road Running that explains running against the flow of traffic, run single file, don't wear headphones, etc.
But, there is a lot of unsupervised running (even with my assistant coach running as well).
Again, tell the coach. Hopefully, he/she will handle things.
Hope this helps,
H.S. Coach #347653
