If it was a standing start on a real 400m track and you're truly untrained, then yes, I would predict you are sub-50 material.

A solo trial having not trained in years besides lifting weights and hitting 53? If the kid never runs and hits that first try I don't see why he wouldn't go sub 50. Anyone agree?
In grade 12 I ran a 400m off about a week of specific training (I did a bit of basketball and soccer for fun but that's it) in 50.02 in spikes, electronic and won one of our city meets.
Everyone seemed to think that was crazy fast off no training. So next week I went out and backed up with a 51. something at another meet. I totally thought I would train and run 45 no problem.
4 years later haven't broken 48.8. Have been dedicated and training the whole time.

I ran track my softmore year and high school and am 20 years old now. I went to the track today and had my friend time me for fun and I ran a 53 second 400 in tennis shoes. I lift weights but the last time I did cardio was years ago. Do I have potential to drop sub 50 if I train and join my college track team?
Thanks in advance
No, you are delusional. There are kids in the 7th and 8th grade that run faster than that. You wouldn't even make the 14 year old boys 4x4 team at the Jr. Olympic nationals top teams. You wouldn't make some top college women's 4x4 teams. LOL!

Yes, but only if you actually give it a try.

How often do you smoke bongs? How many hours trained/day ?
Bud if you were to train you could do some stuff, but I’m 19 and running 44.5 and A TON of my friends that I have been running with since 12 that could always keep up with me, stopped at 52 secs at around 17 and cannot get any better, moral of the story is, some people are made for that race and some are not, just learn what you can do

Great advice...……………...about three years to late to this old thread.

No I ran a 47 low in flip-flops on a cinder track with a blindfold and handcuffs after 6 months in a South African prison where I was beaten every day with a baseball bat and I still couldn't make my college team.
LMAO

It's a good time. But probably because you're light. What's your weight?
And you have to be able to deadlift over 505 lbs and run a fast 400 meter dash at the same time or it doesn't count.
Everyone seems to leave out the most important aspect when it comes to running 400s... And that is body weight.
Let's try to really focus in on how important weight is for the 400.
Meaning it's easy to run a 400 if you're light.. Under 190 lbs..
Harder to run a 400 if you're over 190 lbs and less than 6'0 tall.
If you're over 6'0 tall and something like 6'4 and 210 like Trey hardee then that's just about the equivalent of running a 400 at 6'0 and 185 lbs... So pretty easy to do.
It's a height/ weight dependent event.. Height versus weight ratio..
