Being able to run a quarter in 53, even trained in and in good shoes, is something I consider very promising. More promising for a career as distance runner than a sprinter, but still something I would get excited about.
So let's say your quarter potential with some training ends up being around 51 - estimating on the conservative end. Train for the 800, see what you can do there. Then try 1500/mile, keep extending the distance until the longer distance does not give you the same payback as the shorter one. Remember to be patient - e.g your true marathon potential likely will not show itself until you have been consistent for several years.
The biggest challenge to becoming a world-class runner is in the lack of natural ability to run fast at all - because this is not easily trainable. If all you can do in a quarter is let's say 65, then the chances of you running a 10 K at 65 seconds per lap are zero no matter how you train. However, since endurance is much easier to train, if you can run 51, you have some hope that with proper mileage, speedwork/tempo runs, and recovery (nutrition/sleep) you might be able to run 65 per lap for a long time, maybe long enough to make it a world-class performance.
By far not a guarantee, but at least some hope. And if you fail to become world-class, you may end up a rung or two lower on the ladder, or at least you may develop into a good local runner that once in a while picks up a cash prize in a local 5 K. Regardless, if you try seriously, at least you will not be guessing for the rest of your life if you could have been good.
From what I recall reading a book, Alberto Juantorena ran a quarter with no specific training wearing basketball shoes in 50 seconds. He eventually grew into a 44.27 400/1:43.44 800 runner. So as a very rough estimate, if you had the same ability to respond to training as he did and you trained and recovered like he did you would run around 47 in the 400 and 1:50 in the 800 - good enough to be on a college team with a scholarship. However, who is to say that 400/800 would be your best distances? Now if by chance you have some hidden distance ability we are talking serious business.
