Well...for starters...Bolt is an elite conditioned athlete. He's not comparable to a high schooler who can run 800 but would fizzle out if he had to run the last 800 in under 2:53...Pretty sure he could easily pace himself...the guy is conditioned...elite conditioned.

And when you say run 800, do you mean without training or with training? Even elite guys who don't train for 2 months might drop back 10 or 20 seconds in ther mile...If doing a fresh start...Pretty sure Bolt could train to run a sub 5 if he cant do it out of the blue right now...

Got the link from Chris Chavez of Sports Illustrated.

Basically, when asked about the mile he said he has run 2:07 for 800 and "of course" he could break 5 for the mile.

2:07 answers some questions as I'm sure people have debated his 800 as well, but I'm not convinced he could break 5. I knew kids in high school who could run 2:07 but only ran 5:00, and they did distance training. I sure Bolt hasn't run a mile at anything faster than a jog since he was a boy, but from 45/400m to 2:07/800m is a big drop off.

Mark, Bolt is an elite 100/200 guy. This is actually a detriment to running a sub 5 mile. His entire physiology is conditioned for anaerobic performances of 20 seconds or less. This means he is less able to perform aerobically than non-elite sprinters.

He would die of asphyxiation if he paced himself for a 5 minute mile.

I knew a 46 second 400 guy, who ran a 2:09 800 PB, then collapsed on the ground and didn't move for an hour.

I find it hard to believe that he can only run 2:07 for a half mile. How can someone who can probably run 46 seconds for 400m only run 2:07 for a full 800m?

Begs the question:

What would it take for him to actually try this and give an honest effort?

bolt does aerobic work. that is what the early season 400m in 45x is about.
every 45 sec guy can easily run 5 min miles. duhhh.

Is obvious that you are a runner. it takes month of trainig just to improve your time by one minute

It is astonishing to me that this is a point people actually argue. I have known so many non distance runners to break 5, and none of them were a world class athlete. The root of this is that the distance runners who post here want to believe that what they do is more special than it actually is.

Yes it's true, the fastest man can easily break 5 minutes in a mile. The fact most of you hobby joggers would get destroyed by Usain Bolt in the mile, a distance he never trains for. What's there to be upset about? 2:07 800 is easily sub 5:00, with no training.
I think a better question would be is if he can break 3 hour marathon, and the answer is no. This is because no rational would waste their energy and time running such an obscure distance.
