By doubling, does that mean he turned back around at Tete Rousse, or went all the way back to Les Houches? Perhaps another route?

Don't go by the % O2 on this chart, that is just a percentage based on required fraction of O2 at sea level ambient pressure to get the same effect as natural altitude. Going to altitude doesn't affect %O2 you are breathing in, just lower atmospheric pressure lower the partial pressure of oxygen making it more difficult to move oxygen into the blood (lower pressure gradient into the body).
Going to increasing elevation when already at high altitude can be a greater impact than the same elevation change at lower altitude depending on what the partial pressure of oxygen is, based mostly around the oxy-hemoglobin disassociation curve (http://www.frca.co.uk/images/ODC_3.jpg). Until you get onto the steep portion of the curve the effects of decreased PiO2 are more limited. On Everest, at the summit the PiO2 is closer to 43 (~140mmHg at sea level) so you are significantly down the curve making it more difficult to get O2 into the blood.
So technically the effects of elevation changes are more magnified at high altitude.

what an arrogant idiot. it often times doesn't matter how fit you are. some bodies can handle the altitude, others cannot and don't make it past 25,000'

Pathetic. Say your prayer and go to bed. Remember, never post again.
Come on letsrun! Get out there and make sure this is legit!! This is Robert Young of the mountains. We've gotta catch his RV with him in it going up Everest. What's the speed limit on that road?
Jornet started climbing mountains when he was 3 years old. He didn't start ultrarunning until he was much older.
I never knew about this Karl Egloff guy, I thought Kilian was a once in a lifetime mountain running specimen but this guy can beat Kilian by an hour?
Thank you for explaining this.Physiology wrote:

it wasn't enough to effect the curve.
And he used "effect" correctly, unlike some ;)

It's no secret Killian is a doper. Ask people about his transfusion packs found after a training camp in Switzerland and also in chamonix a few years back!
Also, this Karl Egloff guy is a doper clearly too. Neither of them compete at events with strict or legit drug testing. Karl chases fkt attempts just as Killian does, and why? No anti doping.
Would be interesting if Killian was drug tested before and after his everest attempt. 10 bucks says he tests positive if wada does the testing! Who wanna take the bet?

Egloff´s background is mountainbiking and climbing, not running.
A lot of silly comments on this thread knocking his achievements. I am not sure that you appreciate how good a runner KJ is. Just to give you some perspective, Jonathan Wyatt who moved to the mountains after a distance running career that included 6th place at the commonwealth games in 2.14, holds the majority of the significant mountain running records. If you look at the all time records of a race like Sierre Zinal you will see that KJ is very close to these marks.
KJ = Mountain DK

Clearly you are not a mountain runner? Killian is no where near any of jono wyatt records. He is over 2mins off the sierre Zinal record which he ran with perfect conditions having rabbits pushing the pace early on from what I saw. Jono ran his time alone. Also Killian isn't even the best uphill mountain runner in both long ascents and short vertical kilometer events. Killian lost to Bernard Dematis many times in vertical kilometer of Italy. Kj went for record at Skaala op mountain race in Norway which jono has record also, Kj was not even close and lost to Joe gray of USA, Stian angermund of Norway. Also he race at limone extreme, there an Eritrean name mamo beat him easily barely breathing at end.
Please stop saying this guy killian is the best, get real!! He is a great ultra mountain runner due to lack of competition
