Let's get this out of the way with - I understand that on the roads, Jornet isn't even a sub-elite marathoner, but this is an interesting story nonetheless.
Ultra runner Kilian Jornet is attempting to summit Mount Everest in record time.
The background of the attempt is here - http://www.kilianjornet.cat/en/blog/2016-kilian-jornets-greatest-challenge/
According to his Facebook page, he is still waiting for the perfect weather conditions to start his summit, but it looks like the attempt will start soon.
Interestingly, daredevil Wim Hof made a very similar Everest summit attempt in 2007, and he was able to climb up to 24,000 feet in literally just his shorts. I haven't been able to find any information on how long it took him to do that, and without that info, it will be hard to compare his attempt to Jornet's.

If anyone can break the record, Jornet is the person, and he should be well prepared for the changing conditions.
Everest is totally brutal though. -
Doing this in September is nuts. But at least there's no traffic.
-
I think Jornet could run a pretty decent marathon, maybe around 2,14?

Who cares? This is the equivalent of saying Bolt isn't even sub-elite in the mile. The road marathon isn't Jornet's area of expertise, but right now no one else is better in the mountains. It's a specialty skill for sure. -

Except for the guy that has broken his FKT records on a couple of the mountsins, Karl Egloff

Monsoon season. Almost as bad as winter. -

Kilian has been spending significant time in the mountains of Europe, NA and SA in the last few years. He did speed ascents in Alaska and elsewhere. This isn't huge news, just a progression along the trajectory he's on. -

That was my point - that his lack of foot speed should not be the topic of discussion. -

Maybe around 2:54. -
If you look at his Strava data from 2016, he's logged only 670 miles this year...but with over 300,000 feet of climbing. Bottom line is that he trains for a different sport than marathon running.

Is any one else afraid Killian might die? Everest is much more serious than what he's done before, and he's basically just trying to run up it in shorts, right?
-
The present record for climbing Everest from South Base Camp with oxygen is 8 hours and 10 minutes by Pemba Dorie.
The present record for climbing Everest from South Base Camp without oxygen is 20 hours 24 minutes by Kazi Sherpa.
The temperature on the summit in September is typically -20C (-5F) and it can get as low as -50F at night.
Kilian Jornet seems to know so little about climbing Everest that he doesn't have a clue as to what the records are, or at least he's not mentioning them. Typical distance trash. -
If you guys aren't familiar with him, look at Ueli Steck. What he's done in the world of alpine speed climbing will blow your hair back.

Am I afraid Killian will die?
In two words: Hell no.
Is he afraid I am going to die? Hell no. -

If he's going for FKT, you only need a small window of good weather. A couple days? But I don't know how much of a support crew he might have stationed at the camps up the climb. -

Just f*ck off, will you? You add nothing to this place and only bring your ignorant ideas with you.
You know nothing about distance running so shut the f*ck up. -
Since Kazi Sherpa is also a Sherpa do people refer to him as:
Kazi Sherpa Sherpa?
