He didn't ask permission he just did it. So far his employer has stated that players are encouraged to stand but are not mandated. Personally I would not put my employer in that position.
We will see how this plays out. I'm sure the sponsors and many of the patrons are not to happy with this. This is a delicate issue and sensitive race issue so it will be interesting to see what happens.
If it is a delicate issue it is only because folks are so incredibly insecure that they feel threatened by someone doing something different than what they themselves do.
