His 5k and 10k PRs are from 2011. He's only broke 13 once in the past 4 years.
Bekele went from 12:52 to 12:37 the year he turned 22.
Geb went from 12:56 to 12:44 the year he turned 22.
Kipchoge went from 12:52 to 12:46 when he was 19.
Gebremeskel went from 12:53 to 12:46 when he was 22.
Sihine went from 13:06 to 12:47 the year he turned 21.
Farah is 33.
This is essentially immaterial; from 28 to 33 he has been completely dominant at 5000m. Obviously the historical pattern is for athletes to run their fastest time at an earlier age, but that is only that, a pattern.
It's true that financial incentives have been encouraging east African elite distance runners to the road rather than track in recent years; there is an argument that this devalues his 6 years of 5000m dominance. It doesn't seem plausible to me that all the talent in 5000m running suddenly evaporated in around 2005 though.
EPO testing came in around 2000; the bio passport came in around 2009 (?). Corruption, lack of funds and incompetence mean doping in modern era has hardly gone away as a threat anyway. Considering the results when athletes in the modern era really get after it (Paris 2012), it's likely that the talent is much the same right now, with the difference in times being down to the absence of Komen, Gebrselassie and Bekele to chase.
Farah's career strategy has been to chase wins and titles and not time trial. Yes, this is irritating for many of us, as our sport is as much about human limits as man-v-man competition, but one can't deny its success, both physiologically (still at his peak at 33) and psychologically (opposition completely under his thumb).
The three named above may still be regarded as the best 5000m runners we've seen given their total body of work, but Farah's domination of his era makes it a preposterous assertion that his best 5000m ability is less than that of Gebremeskel, Koech and so on.
There's only one Farah "fanboy" on here, tony the tiger, and whether he's being genuine is an open question. Mo isn't my favourite runner by a long shot. But doubting his 5000m ability is very silly.
