It first occurred early on and Rupp chucked his hat and then had it on. The announcers were confused and speculated that maybe he had another one tucked in his back. They even speculated that he could have gotten it from his support crew at the water stations, but then questioned the legality of it. Upon watching the race video in full, it looked like Rupp swapped out old hats for new hats four different times. Was it just a drier hat. Had it sat in a cooler? Did it have fresh menthol rubbed along the liner? There are countless issues here that require further investigation.
It's brought us to look further into the rulings of running gear and what is allowable for support staff to do. We had previously thought that in competition, runners had to line up with any gear they wanted to use. Example, in a hot, sunny race if a runner doesn't start with a hat, he or she cannot just grab one from outside the race. At least this is what we previously thought.
Without questions Galen Rupp was given materials other than water at the support stations and we're interested in finding out the ruling on this issue. It was hushed up when raised by NBC announcers.
