Centro and others will get in front and slow down, a tactic that I greatly despise.

Between the finals and the olympics aren't there other opportunities to hit the QT? I know there are Monaco and London DL. More realistically, he probably thinks he could never beat centro/andrews or others in a kick.

As has been pointed out repeatedly, there is no chasing the standard after the Trials this year.

Centro and Andrews can close a 3:37 race in sub-1:50 for the last 800m. In a 3:35 race, they would still go 57.xx-52.xx on the final laps.
For JMac or anyone without the standard, they need to run for time first, and then then just wish/hope/pray that other guys have a bad day. At least if they run 3:35 and get 4th, they will know that it just wasn't in the cards.

There is no way Centro can force others to run a slower pace. If Centro doesn't run an honest pace, then JMac and his pals should ignore him and set their own pace.

JMac will also have to run faster than he has in years. So: Yes, this is wishful/delusional thinking.

Not going to happen?
A day late and a dollar short?
Shoulda, coulda, woulda?
Yes how delusional to think you can run a 2 second SB and 2 seconds slower than PB in a race. That has never happened!
I think Merber's best chance is if the race goes fast. He's never had a great tactical race and his personal bests have come in victories kicking off a fast pace. Fast pace best suits Centro, Blankenship, and himself. Andrews would likely finish 3rd or 4th in that kind of race and Colby would be 5th. Andrews having a monster kick in a final is one of the safest bets in track, but a fast pace lessens those chances. If Yorks and McNamara go after it, Centro will take them with 200 and the rest of the field will pass them at 100. A slow race benefits Andrews, Manzano, and Engels. I could see Engels getting 3rd in a slow race and sweeping up guys who thought they could kick with Centro. But it wouldn't matter cause he wouldn't get the standard. Great looking future for him, I could see making a team as soon as next year if Murphy stays in the 800. So far he's versatile as hell, good through rounds and kicks well off a slow pace. Wheating is a lock for 6th place, he always plays it too safe these days. Avila, Gregorek and Winn will fill out the back of the finish in some order

And J-Mac and Yorks will pass Centro, working together to keep the pace honest. It's not like Centro can put his arms out and prevent people from running faster than him.
I don't think Centrowitz cares if it's fast, he will dominate by even more in that case. It's more like Merber who hopes it stays slow.

Jordy Williamsz is not in this race.

I take your point, but looking at JMac's record, I don't see how it is going to happen. He has not run under the standard since 2013. He's been trying all spring and he hasn't run it. Why will this time be different?
I hope he gets the standard. I know how hard he has worked. I was there four years ago when Vin set up a meet with several pacers so JMac could get the standard. He just missed it. It was heartbreaking.
Unlikely, yes, delusional, no. He has every sense to aim for it.

What he is saying is that he wants someone else to set the pace for him, because he's too weak to do it himself.
Good grief.
If it wants the pace to be fast, then RUN FAST.
Agreed. Sounds like he has an excuse set up already if he doesn't take it out: "no one would help me"

I'm pretty sure JMac has run 3:34 2 or 3 times, the last being in July 2014 which was only 2 years ago
He ran a fairly comfortable 3:38 earlier this year and said his altitude training has gone very well so I don't think you can say him trying to run 3:36.20 is delusional
No time, it doesn't matter what you place, get the time (a time few are in shape to run and even if are have to run it on that day), place actually matters, and if JMac breaks 3:36.20 not very many people will have broken it w/ him
