We made fun of Montano (justifiably), so to be fair we have to make fun of Saarel. Starts losing coordination at the end of his 1500m prelim and uses his remaining energy to veer right and get in as many people's way as possible.
C'mon, man.

Back in the day we called it Rigor Mortis....

Surely an injury for Saarel? I mean, that was really weird to watch. He just started listing to the right and taking people out.

I fairness he didn't sit on the track and moan and wail.
Nowhere close or even the same as Montano, but I definitely would file a protest if I was the guy he clearly cut off with less than 50M to go. He led almost the entire race, and credit to him for helping a few guys get in that otherwise wouldn't, but he basically stepped a solid half a lane to the right and cut off a runner who would have gotten in.
Is there a way to watch the replay of these prelims.
Another in the long line of early leaders who struggle late. I watched 5-6 of these just tonight. They are no longer racing the brothers and sisters of the poor and can get away with poor tactics.
Have you people even watched running races before?
He didn't cut anybody off on purpose. Like Ghost said, he started rigging with at least 50m to go and just had nothing left. The runner behind couldn't help but run into him as he slowed so fast. Don't know if I have ever seen a runner dq'ed for that before though.
What a dumb shit.
Embarrassing.
Find a singlet that fits too, you clown.
that's going all out!!!!!!!! wrote:

Seriously, he explains it in his LR video interview. His hamstring had problems.

WRONG. What 5-6 just tonight??
***JUST TONIGHT*** 4 runners at least- Coburn, Simpson, Eccleston, Blankenship, all paced their races & won. There may've been more. Saarel was going for the time qualifier, as he's not better than most OT'ers here.
I'd say leading did runners well.

Coburn didn't lead until lap 6.
Emma Coburn didn't lead till 1k to go.
Simpson and Blankenship are a few classes above what Ben is capable of so it makes sense for them to stay ahead of traffic. The point of going to the front is to drive a pace/avoid traffic and in this case Ben's inability to control his motor functions at the end of this race caused others to miss out on the very opportunity that was slipping through his hands. I understand as well as you all that it is difficult to control yourself at the end of a hard race but it is deplorable to use that as an excuse for impeding others.
Saarel was initially DQ'ed which allowed Presson in on time. Saarel has since been reinstated on appeal with Presson also advancing.

Maybe you and I were not watching the same meet. Off the top of my head:
Higginson led the steeple, faded to last late. Garcia took over for much of the race and faded from what looked like a sure top 3 spot and fell over the last barrier.
Saarel staggered in the final 50 like he had a seizure.
Solis faded from first to 10th in the last 300.
Sutherland and Schneider pushes toward the front and finishes 8th & 10th.
And these were just heats eliminating a handful. This means in comparison to semis and especially finals, the competition is watered down.
Watch the semis and finals and with rare exceptions the early leaders and those pushing and straining to the front fade badly. I don't understand why they are not better coached in this regard.
Wait, so you're saying that in EVERY race, SOMEONE was leading the race? That's CRAZY. And, sometimes that person advanced and sometimes they didn't? Oh man, I'm going to get so much more out of watching the next few days knowing that one of the people in the race is in the front.
What I am saying is that the early leader RARELY ends up in the front at the end, yet someone tries that strategy time and again only to fall apart.
Qualifying heats are a different situation due to the talent disparities, but it even holds true there more times than not. The steeple is a bit of an anomaly due to sighting barriers and surging traffic but the two leaders prior to kicking time faded badly even in that event.
I read on this message board what seems like endless times: "Why didn't he/she lead and push the pace? They know that they can't outkick......"
This is why. Take your chances or be the sacrificial lamb?
Watch the next round and especially finals how few early leaders and those near the front crowding and pushing things end up at the front at the end. There is a reason that the top people in interviews speak of handling the rounds and composure.
I thought Saarel had the rig of the meet. Boy what effort and Rigor Mortis set in with 20 meters. Body just locked in lactic acid.
