that stuff is fine for guys like Windle and Symmonds who come from the strength side of the 800, but Cas is an 800/400 guy. Definitely would not respond to that type of stuff.

Mackey never was a young runner, so he doesn't possess the type of wisdom which you have acquired. When you surpass Cas' times I'm sure Danny will wake up and change that stuff.
Agreed. It reminds me of how a lot of Rowland's OTC 4/8 guys seem to do a lot of long stuff, which is maybe why they aren't great.
Has Schumacher ever coached a 4/8 or an 8/15 guy? I'd be interested in how that worked out and what the training would be like. Seems his group does a lot of long stuff too.
I think that's a good session for a speed 800 runner, to replace their long run. Ie the 1km cruise intervals on short recoveries are the main aerobic session. What speed 800 types don't respond to is any form of longer, slower jogging.
I'd say maybe 6-7 would be enough, but overall good session for a speed 800 runner.
You do realize that those videos are recorded months and months in advance of them being posted? This was probably done during base phase back in the winter.

Except for the part where Mackey mentions how happy he is how the guys have progressed from indoor to outdoor and heading into the trials?

Windle is a speed-based runner. 47 out of the blocks, regular on the 4x4 for Ashland.
He ran some 1500s because he could score points in DII but 3:44 isn't close in quality to his 600-800 ability. Or close to Symmonds' 3:34.

I was wondering same as OP but this sounds plausible.
Only problem that comes to mind is wouldn't it be hard to recover from 5 miles of quality, if they don't/rarely run long runs? Then again if they just did 12 miles at a slow pace like 5:40 or something that might take a couple days to get back from and wouldn't be nearly as specific as this workout.
To some extent you have to push out into areas you neglected before...if Cas did speed training for 8 years (HS/College), he is already close to his "speed ceiling" in all likelihood. Need to seek out a new stimulus, and long reps are one way to do that.
He is not a 400/800 guy... his 400 best is only 47.56. I think he ran a 48.x last year. Nowhere close to his 800 ability.

Trying to get the guy who desperately wishes the 600m was an OG event a lil endurance ain't a bad idea. Have to work on your weaknesses dawg.
It can work or not work, it depends on the runner. McBride, who is much faster than Cas Loxsom, was very helped by a focus on longer stuff. Cas, till now, hasn't shown great benefits.
I can't even recall Cas racing an open 400, and I follow the guy. What I do recall is him splitting 45.x routinely on relays in college.

Except that whole thing could have been scripted so the dialog coincides with current events at the time of its release.

He might be a 400/800 guy, but he'll have to do 2 round of the 800m and then the final
He needs endurance to get him through the rounds, the more stamina the fresher you are heading into the finals

Cas rolling through a 200 in 20.9, faster than Symmonds 21.9
considering that loxsom struggles the last 200m, you'd think that strength work would help him. however, it may be that with his speed he needs more like johnny gray style training.
Mackey is the worst coach in the United States
8 x k could be used in replace of a tempo run for 800 guys. I think I saw someone else posted cruise intervals which is a good call. Many of these true 800 types do not possess the mental aptitude to pace a 4-5 mile tempo correctly so breaking it up into shorter intervals is easier for them to wrap their heads around. To think 800 guys don't need tempo work is a mistake. Even Michael Johnson did a 3 mile weekly tempo at around 5:30 pace.
Everyone needs to improve their lactate threshold! I had a 800 guy run a sub 47 400m who ran at least one threshold workout a week every week of the season!
What is the threshold that separates a "hobbyjogger" from a "sub-elite" runner?
