8? 15? 5? Seems like she can run them all well. It's an embarrassment of riches.

She's best running all 3 of them.
I think she's best off running the 15. While she's good at the 8, I think she lacks the closing speed.
Definitely not the 800; it's debatable between the 1500 and 5K.
I thought at first she should be in the 1500 as she is #2 in the US this season, but I see why she chose the 5K. The 1500 is deeper and could be more of a crapshoot. She ran 15:06 indoors so she is very good at the 5K and in a tactical race her speed will give her a big advantage in the final kick. It's a bit curious that she hasn't raced anything over 1500 all outdoor season, but I assume she did longer/faster efforts in training that show she is in good 5K shape.
Plus, the 5K field could thin out a bit if some people don't double back after making it in the 10K (possibly Huddle will want to focus on just the 10K in Rio ... I don't know her plan). I'd agree the 5K is Houlihan's best shot to go to Rio and maybe her best event in the long term as well.

David Torrence had the standard in all three of those events.
Fast forward to the 1500m final.
Final lap. He's in good position on the curve after the bell.
I was shouting at the tv screen while gorging on cheese puffs.
Then he makes his move a bit too early on the curve before the final straight away.
It's possible that being too solid across the board can result in a. A of focus and b. over confidence that leads to imperfect racing.
The trials are tight so even minor missteps in racing can cost a runner a spot. Practice makes perfect.
*a lack of (necessary focus)
She can't even decide what color she wants her hair to be, so she could also be a little indecisive about her distance.
BTC doesn't train runners for the 800 or 1500. Of courses she's running the 5k.
