Please fill me in, but this guys is a 13:07 5k last year.
why run the 10k and possibly ruin his chances for the 5k.
Rupp / True / Mead will all be doubling back.
The smart move for him is to run it fresh.
Please show me the folly of my thinking.

More big names in the 5k to beat besides those 3
Equal or faster than 13:07?

Rupp won't run the 5k at the Olympics so he won't need to beat him for a spot.
Ryan H has, but after that, its all guys in the mid teens, and Rupp and True will be doubling back.
Mead has that 13:01, but he'll also probably be doubling up.
I agree there are other strong guys in the 5k.
just seems like he's only in his 7th year of running, he can't match the strength of the guys doubling back from the 10k, and the 5k is his best event. Why try to do such heavy lifting. Go for you best event, especially your rookie year as a 24 year old.
Maybe he just likes two opportunities to qualify. If the 10K goes hard and he doesn't see a realistic shot to finish top 3 then he can always drop off and save his legs for the 5K.
Then again, because he has a faster 5K time, maybe he feels his best shot is in a slow championship 10K race rather than a tactical 5K which could give some advantage to the guys with better 1500 speed/kicks.
All these posts and no one thinks AlSal is using him to pace Rupp? That has been the M.O. since the NOP began.
Why do you think he was brought on? Why do you think he has hardly raced? Why was he better at Oregon?
Answer in paragraph above.
Surely Rupp isn't doubling the 10000 and 5000 this year?

This could be plausible had Rupp not won the past 7 USA Outdoors 10k's.
There is only one logical reason for this descision... This is a 400 meter race and, on Friday night, everyone at Hayward Field and on this site, will see that the Big E is one of the three fastest closers in America.
he didn't run 13:07 at Oregon and he ran a good 3k this winter but nothing much so far--last week's result was a surprise but maybe he was tired from training. 3k/5k are his best event but 10k tends not to get the best guys. rupp takes one spot, mead likely another if he's in it. ritz is out. who is left? chelanga has a 27:08 but hasn't run well lately. chelimo ran very well at 3k indoors. is he in there?
Don't sleep on Chelimo

True, who just ran 3:36 and has a 13:02 PR.
Ben True
Maybe Jenkins and Salazar--that is, the athlete and the coach, one who has been doing the training and one who has been scheduling the training--actually know what would be best for him.
very true. So, one spot available after Rupp and True.
I just looked at the qualifiers list and Chelimo was only in the 5000m. So, there we have Mead at the top of the list, Jenkins fourth, Rupp, True, Hill being other contenders if they run. Not sure what happened to Bumbalough.
In the ten Estrada is qualified in both events, as are Mead, Jenkins, True, Rupp, Lagat. Chelanga would be a better bet if he were sharp and pushed the pace. In a high 27 race, Lagat would be tough, maybe even in a mid 27 race as sometimes happens here. Should be fun to watch.
But the guy I forgot, aside from True, was Bernard Lagat.
