Well, he has dropped to 10th place. Hope someone is along side him making sure he is okay.

True, he could teach them a thing or two.
You don't need to DNF to learn something. You could already be smart enough beforehand not to walk off a ledge.

He walked off the ledge of his own free will before.
Andrew Miller, Lessons learned: At the 2014 Pine to Palm 100-miler in Williams, Oregon, I went in with a sacroiliac-joint injury [in the lower back] and dropped at mile 40. I was too focused on racing and hadn’t taken any time off that year to let my body recover. Moving forward, I know that I can’t focus so much on racing. I have to leave time in there to take it easy and run just to go run.

JW was ahead 54 minutes at 85.2 miles.
He INCREASED that lead to 60 minutes at the 89.9 aid station. He went off course before the 93.5 aid station.
Walmsley DID NOT overestimate his ability or pace, he simply went off course.
At that point the problem becomes getting low on fuel as he had to run a lot farther between the aid stations. An extra 40 minutes (initially estimated) can make a huge difference when you may already be near depletion.
True dat. Looks like the only thing he overestimated was his blind knowledge of the course. What a waste this guy could have ran sub 14:20 on this hot day which would have been incredible
For those here that don't know much about trail running (most of you) the three most common problems that derail a long race are stomach issues, starting too fast, and going off trail.

Which happens most often when you lose mental focus. When course monitoring, I have seen trail runners running, looking down, and running over a marker without know they missed it.
Everyone goes off trail in ultras, that's part of what makes the sport look bad. This time it cheated you off a great headliner performance.
Best finish line crossing so far is Jesse Haynes place ten, wobbling, kissing ground, general haggard appearance. Good rally man.

11th place looks worse.

This. Just have a well marked course, why be so lame and cheap a$$? This "sport" only loses when people get lost, it's dumb as fVck. Today's race was made stupid.

Well, Walmsley just got chicked, and soon to be multi-chicked.

This is dumb as hell. Why don't they just run the race on a track. Pretty sure no one would need a coast guard rescue or wander off the track for 40 minutes. And no one needs Lance Armstrong to pace them on a damn track.
Frickin clown show.
I think it´s a lot worse watching 87 identical Africans running 25 laps around a track.
Chris Mocko - 7th place!
this guy!
Congrats Kaci Lickteig!
you obviously are a newer runner, and probably didn't ever run track.don't be ignorant about something you don't know about. all of the guys you're cheering started as identical white guys running around tracks.you generalizing racist piece of phuck

I ran a sub-29 10000 in 1978, so I´m certainly not new.
In his pre-race interview JW talked about dropping his pacer. The place where he said he likely will drop his pacer is about where he went off course.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
