According the internet, 8 Americans have the Olympic standard:
Matthew Centrowitz 3:30.40
Evan Jager 3:32.97
Garrett Heath 3:34.13
Kyle Merber 3:34.54
Cory Leslie 3:35.36
Ben Blankenship 3:35.48
Robby Andrews 3:35.52
Leo Manzano 3:36.16
Unless Jager's running the 1500, that leaves 7 guys who are eligible to go to Rio.
The USATF has set the Trials standard at 3:38. So guys like See, Masters and McNamara could show up at the Trials and hope for a fast race. Leer has to hope he gets a fast(er) race just to make the Trials.
It is telling that Torrence, who has the Olympic standard, decided he'd rather take a sure thing in Peru than gamble on making the top 3 in the US. If he thinks he can't make it, how can any of these other guys?
It is way tighter.
Garret Heath will run 5k.
Cory Leslie will presumably steeple.
Merber injured.
And it is my understanding you can't even get the Olympic standard at the Trials! So Furman Elite 1500, 2 Portland track meets, Nashville, and Europe races (Stockholm?) are only chances.
What are all these 3:37 guys going to do?
