It seems to me like "taking a break" is really just a nice or delusional way of breaking up, but I could be wrong. I "took a break" from a relationship earlier this year, and all the break has done is convince me that the relationship was not good for me in the long run and not something I want. I had a feeling this was the case while in the relationship but couldn't see it clearly until I got out. This seems to be the case with person I know.
Any exceptions here?

Precisely. "Breaks" are just boring material for bad writers on tired sitcoms. They don't exist in real life. If two people were actually committed to be with each other (eventually) they'd just be with each other (now.)
I know people who've done it....including one couple that, on their second time around, has been together more than a dozen years.
I got back together with a former girlfriend when she came back to town for six months, and it was great. That's all we wanted. "Unfinished business" meant that at some point it would indeed be finished. No harm, no foul.

That's not taking a break. Splitting up and getting back together is something else. It worked for Quenton and Andrea.
By the end of all my relationships I can barley stand the site of them.However, I think it could work if it was one of those things where both people were focused on there career and constantly moving around.
