Ran into Rinaldo Nehemiah, the most talented hurdler ever in my humble estimation, and finally got to test his memory and ask him a question that has plagued me since the first time I saw him run at the Penn Relays in 1979.
I said, "Rinaldo, I remember at Penn back in 1979, you were running anchor for the University of Maryland in the 4x200. You got the stick at least 20 yards down, and dropping the jaw of everyone in the stands, you smoked him - that was the fastest I'd ever seen anyone run. Do you remember it?"
"Of course."
"Do you remember your split?"
(Without missing a beat) "19.1"
I don't know what the world best is for a leg on the 4x200, but 19.1 seems damn fast, it sure looked it.
And incidently, he was as affable, appreciative, and forthcoming as anyone could ever want. A class act all the way. Too bad circumstances went against him, or they'd still be chasing his records.
