It would be funny if this whole thread was created solely by two people. Funnier if it was just one person. -> Teg.

A lot of bad responses.
Would you trade that AR run, the HS & College national championships, and a summer of sub-13 5ks for many world and Olympic team qualifications. I'm not sure anyone would choose the latter.

I would. No one's going to remember the guy who just made a lot of teams. But the first one to break 27? Legend.

We are all dumber for having read this.
Care to elaborate? The point is to become great, not just consistently good.

The point is that you don't understand the difference between "latter" and "former". So you agree with the original post but write as if you disagree.

I personally would trade Solinsky's 26:59 & HS/college career for Teg's career. This would obviously come down to your philosophy about running. I was always the type to run for the win. My first introduction to running was in elementary school - we'd race from pole to pole, the point was to win to see who was the fastest. There were no times. So, growing older, the point of running track and field was (still) to win the race to prove you are the best. Running fast times always leaves room for subjectivity. What if it had rained that day, or been 90 degrees, or Rupp didn't have rabbits on record pace? Or better, what if Teg was in that race? Times are always up for debate IMO. However, wins and losses are fairly concrete.
Running fast times and records is cool but it doesn't prove you are better in a head-to-head race. Teg beat Solinsky in nearly ever race they ran as professionals, I'm fairly certain Solinsky wishes he had Teg's success, and beat Teg in those races, more than Teg wishes he ran 26:59.
Records get broken. In fact, Solinsky's record has already been erased from history for nearly 4 years.
However, you can never take away being an Olympian - that's set in stone.
You can never take away being the Champion, either.
Think about how many guys ran faster than Centro in 2011, but Centro snagged a bronze -- all of those wish they were Centro.
Teg didn't really win a lot though so your entire blustering doesn't amount to much. He made teams by finishing in the top three. His international highlight that everyone is gushing over is a 4th place finish. Again, that is not a win.
Solinsky did win that 10K race, though. The HS and collegiate championships that others are dissing were also wins for Solinsky.
P.S. no one has ever wished they were Centro.
Teg:
2007 - USA Indoor 3,000m champion
2008 - USA Indoor 3,000m champion *Beating Solinsky*
2008 - USA 5,000m Olympian *Beating Solinsky*
2009 - USA Outdoor 5,000m champion *Beating Solinsky*
2009 - 4th place WC 5,000m
2012 - USA 5,000m Olympian
Run Down:
Indoor Titles: Teg 2, Sol 0
Outdoor Titles: Teg 1, Sol 0
Olympic Teams: Teg 2, Sol 0
Yearly:
Who was better?
2007 - Teg
2008 - Teg
2009 - Teg
2010 - Solinsky
2011 - Solinsky
2012 - Teg
2013 - Teg
2014 - Teg (62:04 1/2)
So Teg won 2 indoor 3K titles and the one outdoor 5000 meter title.
Solinsky 26:59 FTW!!!!

You're kidding yourself if you actually believe that last statement. He may be a cocky prick, but in terms of fame/popularity, I'd say Centro is near the very top among active US distance runners- behind Rupp, probably still behind Lagat and Meb, but at least as popular as any other US runner you'd care to name-Jager, Derrick, True, Hill, etc.
There's a difference between wanting to be as fast as someone vs wanting to actually be that person.
I think it would actually suck to be Centro, always worried that WADA will catch up with Alberto.
Solinsky seemed to rise and fall so rapidly.
Very similar to Alberto Salazar.
