Oftentimes a boss can't make termination decisions unilaterally unless he owns the company. They have to involve the HR department which likes to build a case before terminating someone (several warnings, coaching, etc) . You need to contact HR or your boss's boss immediately for some clarity. You might mention that you were very upset when your boss terminated you so you immediately left for the day and didn't think you had any options. Act innocent and confused and mention you heard your boss left that same day so you are checking to see if the termination was legitimate. They should provide you some sort of termination letter.

i agree with this. it takes us months to fire someone. and we aren't even that large of a firm, the larger the firm, the longer it takes. there has to be a well documented case.
i would contact HR. Further, if they do maintain your firing, i would push for more severance.
