got to see the kid compete in h.s. since his freshman year (in the same league where i coach), and he was undoubtedly 13-14 years old, though by his looks he may as well have been 10 years old. tough kid, completely ignorant of racing/pacing--i remember him going out crazy-fast at races and dying a miserable death. time, experience and fitness have all cured him of this.
also in our league at the time: garret corcoran, who recently broke 4 in the mile for cal berkeley indoors (same grade as sydney), and a younger austin tamagno--watching these three go at it on a regular basis in league meets in track and cross country was pretty cool and insanely rare--maybe even more cool than we knew at the time. sydney could run and win races in a variety of ways--if there's one thing missing in his repertoire it's consistency, but i'm betting with time he'll master that as well...
He seems undeveloped in a number of ways. Definitely a contender for the next Olympic cycle, given patient development.

14:20 not even a year ago. Runs 13:36... Impressive improvement... For a guys who's most likely 25-27 years old. People believing that he's only 19!? HAH what a joke. Just like cheserek, way older than the average college age freshman, OR SENIOR for that matter. I know it doesn't matter in D2. But common folks he's obviously had many years under his belt training in Tanzania before coming to America, then dominating the HS scene in Cali as a 20+ year old
Except for the whole "born and raised in Orange County California" thing, you have some great points... jackass

Yeah, some crazy Efffs in this place.
How good was he in HS? I literally never heard of the guy until this weekend. Thanks for he info Cush!
i think 4:10 mile in h.s. a bad day took him out of what would have likely been his better race, the 3200, in post-season his sr. year. i think he ran 14:2? 5k, winning 2014 ben brown (vs. mostly college/open runners/and a masters runner who dropped out) his senior year also...

He was born and raised in the USA. That makes him an American.
Racism is ugly even in these relatively benign forms.
Nice kid. Bought him a few beers this summer.

While hanging with Lomong I take it?
Sydney Gidabuday is a great young kid. I am also a coach in his league (he ran for El Modena not Estancia HS as mentioned in the post-race interview) and am appalled by racism that takes place on the board. We are all immigrants or descendants of immigrants but Sydney was born in Ca. and is the regular age of a redshirt freshman.
He's been a stud for a long time and as Cush stated he comes from a stacked league. I believe Sydney's senior year we had 5-6 guys under 4:18 in the same league. To add to the positive conversation, I believe that his splits were something like 4:23, 8:47, 13:07 and 13:36. He's a great example of where hard work and determination can get you. I hope you're not reading this garbage but if you are GO SYDNEY!!!
1 Corcoran, Garrett 12 Villa Park 14:28
2 Tamagno, Austin 10 Brea Olinda 14:33
3 Gidabuday, Sydney 12 El Modena 14:54
4 Ogden, Jake 10 Dana Hills 14:56
These 3 were the top studs of OC back in 2013 like the other two coaches said above, he was a great runner and would always take it out at die hard paces which would work on good days but not on bad days. He also had a great track season if I recall he won cif masters for the 1600 with a 4:09 beating out tamagno and corcorran.
Very glad to see Corcorran and Sydney doing great in college. Corcorran dominated the OC

gidabuday>>>>>
That was the OC Championships in 2014. Garrett crushed the field and set the official course record, Austin gave it his all and Sydney shut it down when he realized that he wasn't going to win. There were many races where he decided to shut it down if he wasn't going to win. All three athletes faced off at league finals where Corcoran ran a course record of 14:00 (previous record was 14:29), Austin finished in 14:09 and Sydney ran 14:24.
Great kid. Bought him a few beers this summer.
Question being why is he at Adams State? Oh wait...
"Academics: Is majoring in Business...Graduated High School with a 2.5 GPA"
Indeed. Crazy how those 3 runners were in the same league. Here is the race video from that year. Shows gidabuday taking it out at break neck pace for a while

Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
