I think Mark Carroll is really being direspected on this thread.
He's ran 7:30 before! Webb would be a success if matches Carroll's career times.

This conclusion would require someone who knew what they were talking about. In this case the original poster hasn't a clue.
I'm with Cragg Advocate and Pfeiffer. Yes Webb needs to face top competition (although Mark Carroll is pretty stout), but not necessarily EVERY RACE. Different races have different goals, it is clear that at BU Webb wants to practice doubling and winning slower races. There will be plenty of time for Webb to run fast times and race the best in the world later on.
Running slow times?? Webb jumps the rabbit of a 2:04 half and you think he wants slow times? If it wasn't for Webb pushing the pace the race would of been slower. That was a huge effort for Webb and if Carroll had run the race that Webb did the order of finish would of been reversed.
Why the Webb bashing by so many presumably US guys? 3k is not his main distance and his time shows he is progressing for the time of the year we are in. I am British but I would love Webb to run well. His 3-32 was great : OK he didnt do it when it really mattered but he showed he was back on the right track and if he again progresses he and his coach have confirmation of what worked for him. They are in a situation to know how to peak better. Do people like Dr Salsa know exactly what type of training Webb is doing right now ? I would suggest not so how can they make a judgement of where he is in relation to his 1500 potential next summer when it counts. Give him some support and dont hide behind a false name !!
How do you know he was making "tactical mistakes"? How do you know a thing about his race, his intentions, or his goals? Answer: You don't.
He was the fastest US miler last year, went to Europe, kicked some butt, qualified for the Olympics. Oh he didn't win there. Neither did a lot of people. Clearly leaving Michigan early has worked well for him. It certainly seems to have worked out somewhat better for him than staying did for Brannen.
Do you really think he cares about a meaningless 3k this early in the season?
He's shown already that he's willing to go race the fast guys, but he doesn't have to do it every freakin time. He's just plain not ready for a very fast 3k yet.
Hmmm, that time would've made him the 5th fastest American last year, with 3 of those times @ Boston. Not much to complain about, considering he didn't have rabbits for 2000m like they will @ boston. If his goal was to run a 3000m indoor American Record, most likely he would've been at Boston.

While i agree with your other points Brannen didn't run 3:53 in high school, yet ran signifigantly better this weekend than webb did
(not meant to bash webb, just stating what I think)
Could you explain your statement "(Brannen) ran significantly better this weekend than Webb did..."
Webb ran two races in two days. Had he run the mile at Reebok he would've destroyed Brannen.
