46.3 in training is very, very fast. Think that Coe never ran a flat 400m faster than 46.8. Backing it up with a 47.4 is impressive. This is even assuming a 10-15 minute break between. Even up to 20 minutes this is impressive.

He must be in 1:44 shape at least.

Lets see if he can run 1:41

totally - if he did this off 5min he would be in at least 1.41.xx shape at worst.

2x400 is a standard workout -or fit test for 800m runners. They will usually do this workout early in the season and again a week before a major comp. It is not uncommon for a 1:43 (400/800) types to do two 47s, with 2-3 minutes recovery. However, 46.3 is quite fast, even with a full recovery, perhaps unless he is a solid 45x 400m runner. Even world class 400m sprinters don't run much faster than that in time trials.

2x400 with 2-3 minutes in 47? Impossible workout for a 1.43 guy... many of them hardly break 47 once, fresh, and in a race... even speedy athletes like Cas Loxsom have only 47.5 pr. This winter Charles Jock paced a 800 (ran 600m) later went on something like 20 minutes later and ran 48.99 for 400m. Maybe Solomon or Rudisha at their best could run 2x400 @47 but surely with at least 6/8 minutes rest.

Yeah, if he's taking as many PEDs as Mahkloufi then he certainly could do that workout

Everyone is so concerned about time on this site. How long it took him to run, how long he wasn't running. Can't we just give people a hand for getting out there and giving it a shot?

shame that evan scully's not working with him this year so that we won't get more workout videos. He was running essentially world record 1k pace throughout that workout (52s). This workout for Boris Berian, a guy who was probably in mid 1:42 shape last year in the right conditions, shows that he is on track to run that this year.

First, lactic acid rapidly dissociates to lactate and hydrogen ions in the human body because of the pH.

Second, it is largely dependent on what level of exercise he engages in that will determine his rate of clearance. Assuming he is just walking, within just 10 minutes Boris will likely have cleared have the lactate within his muscles according to published literature on the subject. Though his heart rate will most assuredly have dipped down below 100 bpm within the first 4 minutes. T

I would guess that Boris probably got something like 15 minutes of rest in this workout just as a guess...

I am also guessing that this was done with a running start which probably gives him a half second on each of these. nonetheless, 46.8 would be very fast for him in an open 400.

No way he ran this in practice. His best in a race is 46.9. Hard to believe even if it were 47.3 and 48.4. If it were true he'll be a world record holder this year. Nope don't think so

His PR is from his high school state meet. I would hope that he does not have the same PR training as a professional athlete. He probably had a running start in this workout too.

The session is possible, but I'd say he needs 30 minutes at least

I ran 2x400 in 1:07 with 10 minutes rest. I gave it a shot. Interesting? No.

To illustrate just how fast this workout is, if even possible,

Joaquim Cruz, coming at things from more of a distance perspective (though he ran 3:34 despite likely a similar 400m to Coe), would only rarely do any 400s under 50. He did a 3x400m workout in maybe 49/49 high/51, if I am not reading the Barbosa workout instead of Cruz. Cruz would also do something like 3x400 with the first 200 at 30/31 and the 2nd 200 around 23-25. But 2x400 in 46/47? Who else has ever done a workout like this, besides maybe a Michael Johnson or Jeremy Wariner type?

Hart limited his guys to 95% in workouts. An example for Johnson was:

3 x ( 350m in 46s rest 1min 100) 5min rest

Someone in a thread on WIlson Kipketer claims the following:

"I heard from a friend who was in St. Moritz in 1998 that Kipketer did a couple of 400s in 47/48 sec and everyone around stopped his training to watch him running because of his great running style."
