Even more drama from Guelph (Canada) involving Speed River club

Is this the club which was associated with Ron Bowker (sp?)?

What ever happened to his plan to take over Canadian T&F? He had a sort of plan for a coup.

These people should be charged with fraud, as thousands of dollars were granted to an unqualified athlete and stolen from the more deserving one!! Don't let these fraudsters in Guelph get away with this!!

No, but the head coach of Speed River is Dave Scott-Thomas and he was mentored by Ron Bowker.

This is the club that the National federation tried to give national championships to, despite there being stronger bids for those events which eventually won on appeal.

Apparently, they teach their athletes to push other runners around on the track and lie on their government carding applications.

Speed River is equivalent to NOP and the coaches DST/Moulton are a lot like Salazar. Not sure about grey area drugs, but Guelph is certainly content to lie, cheat and deceive to screw others over for their own benefit. This particular funding thing bugs me more so than any other time, perhaps the police and media should be notified and if they think it can get clicks, then they'll publish this story. But they won't since it is unfair to damage the Quest for Gold (government run) lottery because a separate organization fraudulently distributed the funds donated to athletes by QFG. The committee thought they could cheat the system. If justice is served, they will do jail time for fraud and the money returned and given to the most deserving athletes. Maybe throwing these fraudsters in jail is the only way they'll learn to stop trying to cheat the system when they have power. It seems they keep doing it without any penalties, so enough is enough!

If I remember correctly Dave was the coach at Queens briefly then moved to BC for a couple years then he moved to Guelph in the late 90s. So mid-90s I guess.

This weekend marks the anniversary of the OUA mens 3k fiasco. It looks like 2 of the 3 guys involved in impeding runners in that race are once again involved with this carding issue: Ross Proudfoot and Aaron Hendrikx.

What happened to Chris Duhlanty? - he was the worst of the three in that race last year.

He is focusing on steeplechase and runs for speed river. Last year was his last year running for the University of Guelph.

Speed River works hard to be the best. They are professional and hyper organised.

The haters run mom and pop clubs and then whine when the speed river machine takes (legal) advantage of their own size and abilities to get what they want.

I know it sucks to always have to face an opponent with more resources, connections and influence, but that club was built out of nothing.

It is open to anyone else in Canada to try to take the crown from speed river - go for it rather than whine about these provincial little details.

Dulhanty didn't run fast enough to meet the minimum standard for provincial carding, so not involved in the carding issue.

Sounds to me like some Speed River athletes lied on their applications for provincial funding. The did not earn enough points on their own merit, and they decided to cheat to try and get money from the government.

This isn't hard work, it is cheating, same as they did in that OUA men's 3,000m in which Dulhanty got caught and was DQ'd for cheating.

It's sad to think the guelph people might get carded over a Windsor athlete like Ullman.

Thanks. I hadn't realized that--that Bowker was still coaching then or that DST had spent time in BC. I was pretty out of touch back then.

Based on the criteria set out, the athlete(s) did not meet the basic qualifications to be granted money. So because of that they either lied about his credentials or alterered the criteria in his favor, or perhaps just put him on the carding list and hoped no one would notice or care that he/they shouldn't be on there. The result is one or more athletes were screwed out off funding (about 10k!) because of their fraud.

Last year around this time, Cheat River athletes were posting on the Trackie forum defending their actions at the OUA Mens 3,000m. They didn't do a very good job defending themselves or even taking responsibility for their own actions, but at least made the effort and gave the impression they cared what the rest of Canada thought of their group.

This year some of the exact same athletes, Aaron Hendrik and Ross Proudfoot, have nothing to say about what appears to be lying or corruption related to government funding. Maybe they don't care what the rest of Canada thinks of them anymore or maybe lawyers got involved and told them to keep their mouths shut and hope it all goes away.

Cheat River Cheat!

During his time as the Endurance Coordinator for Athletics Canada, what did Dave Scott-Thomas accomplish? Did he introduce any new programs or policies, like some grass-roots development initiatives, or make any contribution that benefited people outside of his own club?

I was wondering why this thread wasn't bigger; looks like I was looking in the wrong thread.
