Not everyone can run a sub-20 5k? I thought we decided that anyone can go sub-15 given the proper training.

First, the term "hero" is way over used. Second, i call bs on this whole story. An 8 hour finish means you did zero training, in fact you have to intentionally walk at a slow pace to to achieve this time. You appear to be a reasonably fit 31 year old. Just admit you wanted to win your third Best Storyteller award and this was a clever way to do it."

Congratulations on not bothering to train
"Will never be fast" is defeatist. Sub-4:30 is achievable for almost every bloke, sub-5 for women. And yes I realise people who do 6:30 have trained.
The marathon is a run. And I'm sorry, but below 15 minute mile pace is not running. It's walking. He's not obese (which slows walking pace meaning you have to run to compensate) He walked it.
The article itself begins with a litany of reasons/excuses for not training.
I will never support or encourage people to run a marathon without doing the training. It's dangerous, it's stupid and it's ridiculous. People who don't train die doing extreme sport. The 'get you round marathon plans' are a minimum effort and this guy clearly didn't do that"
I like this Philip Whitehouse guy.

There are so many people who post their mediocre accomplishments on Facebook just to get some type of validation from their Facebook friends. I see people posting their running pace and maps online after they just jogged 10 minute pace for 30 minutes, as though that is some type of accomplishment.
Saw on my news feed the other day a selfie at 6am when it was 15 degrees (heavily bundled with reflective vest) so all her friends can say "Crazy!", "You Rock!", "Girl Power!!!".
She averages 11-12 min/mile in the summer.
