Okay, Webb had a great career before his turn to triathlon. However, despite all the records, he never made an Olympic team in the mile.

The world where the 1500 is what matters and nobody outside of the barely-competitive US cares about the mile.

I'm being harsh here; obviously Alan was great. But he never really "made it" on the international level-not even to the degree that Centro and Manzano have.

High school sub 4 has lost its luster. And the pre meet directors dropping the ball and having 2 sub 4s in separate heats instead of the same heat.

Unless someone beats webbs record or even flirts with it, it's just not exciting anymore.

It's still a fine accomplishment but like a high schooler breaking 1:50 in the 800. The WOW factor isn't there anymore.

OF COURSE the high school mile will continue being exciting. It has only lost it's luster to so-called fans like Fanzano who think that only record-breaking runs are worth getting enthused about.

Drew Hunter's run was worth a WOW today. Michael Slagowski's run was worth a WOW today. Austin Tamagno's run was worth a WOW today, and the fact that he "only" ran 4:01.04 doesn't change the truth that his mile was a superior effort in the annals of high school miles. One of the top times EVER...but "only" 4:01.04!

Apparently to Fanzano, the mile hasn't been interesting since one day in May 2001, because nobody has even come close to Alan Webb's record since.

A meet like the Prefontaine Classic demonstrates that all-time great efforts can be witnessed, and celebrated, even though the recordbook remains unaltered. And that there will always be unreasonable fans...
