How does this affect the race?
After dealing with a setback and missing some training in an already short build up, Jerry and I have decided to not pursue the OT marathon.

Why is he not doing the marathon trials? What will he do instead? World indoors?
Smart move. Wasn't going to qualify in his debut marathon. Sets him up to get paid for a debut and enter into the distance at a more relaxed pace. Still has good 10k prospects. Rupp and True his main competitors. Needs to hope for a fast trials race.
7th place will now finish 6th.8th place will now finish 7th.9th place will now finish 8th, etc.

Bummer. It would have been interesting to have him there, but can't knock his decision.
Hope he gets healthy and gets back into shape for track season. He is overdue for a 10k pr and if healthy should be #2 at USAs
Derrick was not a lock for a top finish. He may well have bombed and run 2:15. Remember when people thought Matt Llano was the next big thing because he ran sub-62? Well Derrick only ran 63:xx at Jax. He clearly was not ready for the Trials.
He's better off. He can make the 10k team.
This is simple.
1) Derrick wasn't going to run unless he was fit and rearing to go.
When we talked to him a week and a half ago, he didn't want to talk on air about his fitness/training, but it was clear there had been a 'setback' and the next week was critical.
2) He'll get ready to try to make the 10k team. He's not a '3k' guy. The key for Derrick is health. He wasn't healthy last spring and he wasn't healthy in this buildup. As someone who struggled with Achilles injuries for years, when I heard he had an Achilles issue last spring, I said to myself, "Maybe he shoudl have surgery right now." That baby can stay with you. I hope it's not an Achilles issue.
What is yoru point? The fact that LLano is a 2:12 marathoner mean that a) yes Chis Derrick would be competitive. If Derrick is healthy, at worse he's a sub-61 minute guy which probably translates to sub-210 in the marathon.

1.) Disappointing news, indeed. I was SERIOUSLY excited to see him run the Trials.
2.) Did anyone see Ben True's comment? Ben wrote: 'you sure? I really think the marathon would be great for you- and as they always say: "there's no time like the present"' Do you think Ben is trying to encourage Chris to participate in his best distance, or just decrease the competition for a spot in the 10,000m (even though Ben prefers the 5,000m)?
Ben is making a joke, the premise being that he secretly would prefer not to have Chris in the 10000m. Chris responded with this, also a joke: "@bentrue I think we can both agree that I'm not nearly as suited for the marathon as you are for the 5k..."
Derrick would have had NO chance to qualify and would have been sorely embarrassed, which is why he eventually saw the light and dropped out.
True will stick to the 5k at Trials . . . he stated last year after USAs, "I really don't like the 10k", only ran it as a backup in case he didn't make the 5k team.
Rupp & Mead . . . at this point, not knowing Rupp's marathon intentions . . . are the top 2 US 10k guys.
Derrick was only 8th last year running on a tender achilles, but was 4th at the 2012 Trials and 2nd at 2014 USAs.
So, all depends on his training.
With no cross country races, indoor races or marathon trials, sole focus is the Trials 10k.
If Chris can keep the achilles at bay, definite 2nd or 3rd placer, maybe even the winner if Rupp qualifies for the marathon and ditches the 10k.
If not, a crapshoot, as any number of other 10k guys like Kipchirchir and Rono, along with non-qualifying marathoners (e.g., Vail, Estrada, Chelanga, Braun, even Ritz) will be in contention.

True will run the 10k at Trials for the same reason he ran it at USAs. The 10k comes first. It's not as though he's guaranteed a spot in the 5k.
Seeing as he JUST RAN 63:xx I don't think he is "at worse" [sic] a sub-61 guy.
