Maybe in a year or two if he doesn't quit before then he'll begin to fathom the kind of effort and talent it actually takes to do something like this. He seems like a sane, normal guy, just a bit ignorant.

Am I right in saying that only two men over 40 have run under 4 minutes EVER!
Coughlan and Lagat to my knowledge.
My guess is he'll readjust his goals in a couple months or so. Its a shame he didn't start 5 years younger. Oh well, I hope he can at least get in the 4's in a year or two.

And Anthony Whiteman
There's a 35 year old 230 lb powerlifter with a detached hamstring and dislocated hip who ran a 4:15 mile in Hokas. He started running in his 30s and only runs 3 days per week between his lifting workouts. If he gets that surgery he's talked about, trains more, and drops some pounds, he could easily run sub 4 at age 40.
If Cam Stiles can do it, it is possible:
Reminds me a bit of Alex Vero.
Just casually decided he was going to run a sub 2:15 marathon and make the GB Olympic team.
Shock news: he didn't.
OK Sarcasm. It took a while but I got it.
"The difference between this guy and the current US outdoor record holder (Jim Sorensen at 4:04.98), is that this guy really wants it. He wants it so badly that he even blogged about it. I'll bet Sorensen never even blogged about it, not even once."
There is zero chance this happens.
It also fuels another thing I hate - when people are assigned a level of respect just for announcing that they intend to do something. Like that friend who everyone is in awe of because he tells them he plans to run a 50 mile race (or sub 3 hr marathon) this year. Meanwhile he's currently churning out 9 minute miles in his running and brunch club, and eventually quits the endeavor completely. Yet he remains beloved and respected because people think he's one of those "crazy" runners and he wears compression socks with skulls on them.
not a chance in the world.
However its no worse than the threads on here saying that Rudisha et al could run 10.3 for the 100m if he tried.
People have no respect for what it takes to achieve world class performance.
I ran 10.3 so it should been pretty easy for me to run a 1:41 right? Its just back to back 12.6 second 100 ms. I could run that all day.
This guy will disappear into the aether when he finds that 5 minutes is way too hard.
So many Uncle Ricos, who never ran, run a fun run and think think they missed out on fame. What they fail to understand is that physical talent is just a part. Even if they ever had it. Which is likely not. The foot in the door.
The rest is being able to screw so much out of yourself, mentally and physically that it would called abuse but psychologists.
Pie in the sky approach to this milestone mark. Start running at 41! Start with 5:00 & see how that goes.
His chances of doing a menage a trois with the Kardashians are way bigger

Which two Kardashians are you targeting? Khloe would be a lock for one of them, and Kim is out of the question.
I'd say Khloe/Kylie or Khloe/Kourtney would be your best bet?
Thats funny
I posted a comment on one of his posts that Letsrun will probably crowdsource $500,000 for his sub-4 achievement and $50,000 for sub-4:30
It's sad that anyone gives these people ink. "OH! I HAVE A GOAL I'M NOW CHASING! I SHALL SWIM ACROSS THE PACIFIC! Check back for my progress!"
Wow, dude. wrote:

-bro, I'm being totally serious when I say that you've got some deep seated issues. Why you're so angry at something so arbitrary that has no direct effect on your life is a harbinger to potential problems in the future. Get it figured out sooner than later.
Agreed.
Reading his blog, it sounds like he views his life as boring and suburban. He is seeking something exciting to work towards to help him break out of that. There is nothing wrong with that.
He also recognizes that it most likely won't happen. Soon he'll recognize it definitely won't happen. Hopefully though, he'll have succeeded in getting into shape and finding a new hobby that gives him enjoyment, something for himself that doesn't come in a 12 ounce can, which it sounds like is currently his only hobby outside of being a husband/father. He'll be a better husband/father if he takes a little time for himself everyday, I would bet.

Hasn't ches run sub 4?
This is like me saying I can run a sub 4 mile just because I'm going to work hard and I'm a good actor. Actually, even the latter is questionable.
I'm afraid that I am guilty of doing this, but without meaning to. One time in high school (I'm in college now) I was talking with some friends about my dream of trying to make the Olympic Trials sometime in the future, maybe 4-8 years down the road. I am nowhere near close a to being a good runner and it was more of just a dream and making the point of how running is a little bit more of an accessible sport than some of the other pro sports. Now I think that a bunch of them think I'm a really good runner. It's pretty depressing whenever I hear someone say I'm a good runner while I'm churning out 15-20 miles a week, struggling to break a 20:00 5k.
I'd rather try for the four minute mile. Look at what happens to the men who hang around these women too long.
