22:23 for Tiernan?! I know he is fast but how short is this course? Conditions were reported as soft and soggy, which makes that time even more suspect. Anyone have any insight?

Course was shamefully short.
Big meet record for Tiernan, in the inaugural Big East 4.5 mile Cross Country Championships.
Heard from a friend at the meet that coaches were talking right around a minute or more from an actual 8K time. That's rather embarrassing for a conference like the BIG EAST.

Anyone know the actual distance of the course? Are they actually passing it off as an 8k or is it short for sure and they just haven't officially disclosed the course distance?
4 guys broke 23:00, that course has to be ridiculously short

Did the Gtown girls run a full team? A few names seem to be missing?
Go Hoyas!
Marquette really needs to fire their coach and rebuild this program. Shameful to say the least from a potentially great school. Who do you think they could get to take over?

What the hell do you expect Mike Nelson to do without the resources to compete with the top four? They beat everyone they realistically could - the "best of the rest." He did his job. No one else in that conference is going to touch Gtown, 'Nova, Providence & Butler. No one. Still not bad on the womens side with something clearly working over at Xavier (that's the story of the meet even if the Butler women aren't what they once were IMO)...and a true stud in Feivor.
And to answer your questions specifically. No one for what they are paying and for the resources provided. Except maybe some kid straight out of a mid-major volunteer or GA position or an "assistant to an assistant" looking for their first real coaching gig. This job is one step ahead of "entry level."
Now, who do you think they could get in there to take over?
From what I've heard, the last two Marquette male distance runners to make it to regionals on the track were coached almost exclusively by the assistant coach so I certainly think the right GA/volunteer assistant hire could make a difference. Marquette seems to get talent nearly every year and never do anything with it. Minimal to no improvement from year to year.
I used to be on the team, and can confirm those guys were primarily coached by Breitbach. Everyone on the team was upset when he left. Don't know anyone on the team who likes Nelson or his training. Injury rate is pretty high and workouts don't seem to follow any plan. From what I've heard he told his athletes this course was a full 8K and seems to actually believe it, by the way.
I've noticed a ton of these D1 courses are short/super flat. Might as well do XC on a track and make it a lap short. Same difference.
What kind of resources? There are some schools that don't even have tracks or locker rooms that are significantly better than Marquette right now. Hell, most WIAC schools could beat Marquette.
SO WHAT WAS THE ACTUAL COURSE DISTANCE? ANYONE?
sorry lol but im still curious about this. 22 mid is freaking blazing and nobody seems to really even be talking about this. sounds like everyone is in agreement the course was short but id just like to know the distance so i can calculate paces for several of the runers
On tfrrs it has Tiernan's second 3k split as 8:05 so take that for what you will.
When the coaching position opened, the job came down to Nelson and a very well respected female coach, who had a lot of success in the Big 10. MU did not offer a lot of money for the position, so fewer applications than expected. Ultimately, the job went to Nelson because the athletic department did not believe the men's team would respect a female coach, despite her credentials. Seriously.
Take a look at the post-collegiate runners and sub-elites who continue to train after graduation. Nearly all are more successful now than when in college. Training is inconsistent. Tons of injuries. Coaching staff extremely negative and promote toxic relationships among the team. Sad situation.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
