They are probably originally from United Kingdom or learned UK English where "maths" is the accepted term and "math" is considered an Americanism.
'Math' or 'maths' are both short for 'mathematics.' Either seems fine by me.
The British call it "maths." The British are pretentious. So is your teacher.
