What is up with this kid? He needs to get his head straightened. He didn't get the record, so why is he calling it soft.

His point was quite clear, and he made it several times. Most of the top times were largely solo efforts. He feels that if some top runners were pushing each other it could lower. That is an opinion, but certainly a valid one. Most people on this board think Nelson's time on the old course was superior, adding to the validity that the current course record is a little soft.
This kid is a cocky kid....obviously going through some family stuff. But doubtful he will amount to anything, unfortunately. His arrogance bequeaths his insecurity.
How many over-trained high school runners at a high level has CA coughed up over the last 30 years who have amounted to zero later in college? Damn shame.
Keep your mileage low in HS, boys.....have fun. Stay away from coaches who want you to leave it all hanging in that era of your life.

Do you know what team Ammar Moussa ran for in high school?
Do you know what place he got at NCAAs last year?

German Fernandez(you can say he flopped but he has still done ok for himself)
Blake Haney, (got third at NCAAs in the 1500 last year as a freshman, yep a real burnout there)
Oh I don't know, maybe RYAN HALL?

Solo efforts makes the record 'soft'? What on Earth are you talking about? Those solo runs are solo because they are so exceptional.
Aw, did he steal your girlfriend? Kick your dog? Has a higher class rank? Let's discuss your real insecurities, not his fake ones.

This kid is right. The record is soft. He needs to recognize since the record is soft he is in fact softer than the record.
The real prize is Woodward Park. Beat Germans solo record then talk about soft.
That kid must post on letsrun. He'd fit right in with the rest of the haters. He should have said the course record is hobby jogger finisher medal soft.

Malmo, I have seen many of your posts on letsrun and I have to ask: do you have a severe reading comprehension problem? The poster specifically explained what he was talking about when he said soft and solo. Why didn't you understand?
This kid has issues... Hope that he finds a solution to deal with it. I knew somebody like him who didn't get the required help in time (unfortunately)
If it's so soft then he shouldn't need competition to take it down, he should be able to do it solo anyway. Most records are solo, that's why they're records. He was just spitting out excuse after excuse because he's insecure. Doesn't matter, he'll never be truly elite anyway. He's way too stocky and he has mom hips. He was doomed from the start.

I think you're the one with a reading problem. Solo does not equal soft. Period. Full stop.
I said it was his opinion, not mine. If he feels he could run a little faster with Austin T. pushing him, I'm not going to roast him for that. I certainly disagree with solo=soft, as most truly great records will probably be solo by nature. I'm not sure he was making that absolute equivalency for all courses, but you seem to be. But this course layout isn't that old, and by looking how the top 10 times have changed tremendously over the last 3 years, I don't think it's a stretch to say the record is soft. If the weather holds and when they run CIF SS finals, it's probably 50-50 whether either he or Austin will break it. But neither would have a chance at German's record. I've never met Rocha, but I doubt he would say German's record is soft just because it was solo.
The guy is confident and opinionated. That is ok. I thought he was just saying that this course record was not that great. he may be right that he would have run faster with competition. It seems just as likely that he race would have been more tactical but that's his opinion.

I hope everyone understands the full context. Rocha was trolling fellow senior, Austin Tamagno, who set the course record last year and who opted to run in one of the Friday races so that he could take the ACT on Saturday.
So Rocha was attacking Tamagno's record as soft and for ducking him for easier competition.
Rocha's interview was highly immature.
I love this kid. New favorite runner in CIF. Can't wait to see him race at CIF series and whoop Austin T! Kid could have scheduled his ACT for a different day. What a wuss!!
The kid has a point.
First off, he's way faster than any of you are or were in high school, so let's put our jealousy aside. He's confident, which we need more of. And yes, the record is soft. Just look at the short history of the course. Or better yet, watch the race. Rocha was chilling for the majority, easily could have shattered the course record. It's a soft record. Period. Later in the season, if he runs it he'll crush it.
BTW he said it was soft with competition. I think we can all agree that we run faster with competition than without. With comp, he was probably worth ~14:15
First the record is not soft...... think about it..... everyone who has broken the course record in the past has done it alone. Rocha runs 14:24 ties Mercado and Mussa (who both did it alone) Tamagno ran 14:36 the day before alone and in his interview he (the course record holder) said "i just didnt have it on Reservoir". if Rocha and Tamagno would have run together most likely you would not have seen 14:20 because Tamagno would have been 12 seconds behind him. On this course you have to have a good day and be on it to have a chance to run fast and to see a time like 14:20 both of those guys would have to have a good day and be in the same race. The hills on this course are more daunting then maybe even Rocha knows, attack one hill too soft or too hard and it starts to add up as you get to the next, if you are too fast or slow in the valley loop that becomes a problem. That is why the record is what it is and that is why Tamagno only broke it by a second. It is more than just running on this course you have to be very tactical. In Tamagnos interview he talks about the tactical aspects of his race at MTSAC...... and i know it was warmer when Tamagno ran, but he was not making any excuses so i wont either.
But thats just my opinion.........
