Turning 40 this year, I'm wondering just how fast is "fast" in mens masters running. What kind of times are the very top guys running? What about the 2nd tier guys? What are good quality masters events around the midwest?

If you are not running 14:30 5K's I'm going to pass you up with my cane.
Here's the USATF Masters Championships calendar. You'll be sure to find the best Masters in the US at these races. I don't know how much prize money is required, but the 10K in Paso Robles will have $20,000 just for Masters.
I would say that the top 3 to 5 masters in the US are around 29-29:30 for 10K.

Thanks for the link.
Two things:
1) These must have been USATF or TAC sanctioned events, because when looking at the US record times for 19-22 year olds, a few Colorado Americans have beaten those times - not to mention several other college athletes.
2) I see that no one in the U.S. over the age of 36 has broken 14 minutes for 5,000 - damn it - I guess my dream is over. Where's that remote? I guess it's time to watch all the TV I've been missing. Is Fonzi still popular?
mad props to danny martinez-- alhambra in the house, baby!!!
Try this link. This is not really what you are after, but it is interesting.

I used to have a link to a Mississippi guy's web site that had age graded tables AND workout tables. The workout tables would show sample workouts for target race times. For example, 8x400 @61 = 4:15 mile, 8x400 @63 = 4:22 mile. Anyone know here I can find these again?
bon appettit!
geeze--screw the workout tables--just freakin run and race--if you race to your capability --you'll hit your target time...(guess what, it's true even if you didn't know you're "target time")...
Eddy H ran a 45:20 15K at age 41. That would be 3 15:07 5Ks in a row. That's fast. On a related note, there seems to be deeper master's competition on the roads than on the track. I assume that's because the roads pay better.
Try this link..it has everything you will ever want to know about master racing.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
