woah. This actually explains why California has so many talented athletes. Or why NY has good XC teams. or why Texas pumps out talented runners. I never thought about the fact that population size could be related.
I am from Rhode Island and always wondered why New York and California had so many more quality runners than Rhode Island. Your theory makes total sense. Thank you for spreading your wisdom!

Virginia is up there as well. Allan webb, Sean Mcgorty, Andrew Hunter and many others! Our big races are usually won in low 15s or less.

This has been discussed at length, and on a population adjusted basis for High School, the answer is Montana and it's not even close.
