That's good that you kicked well, I'd always recommend 2 easy days before your races that you care about. Next, something I'd suggest is if you're the #5 man on your team, and you train w/ your team mates, in races like that work together with a team mate or 2, to make sure you don't go out too hard, and it will be a lot easier to stay strong in the race w/ a team mate around you.
Not bad for a season opener, I never run well in my first race of the year, I tend to make lots of mistakes, but I guess that's what a season opener is for.
