Star-studded race with top 5 from Beijing 5K, plus Rowbury and Simpson (and others including Coburn and Infeld who both are outclassed here in a flat 3k).
I think the two Americans have something to prove, and so does Dibaba, but for Rowbury/Simpson to finish better than sixth will be tough. Ayana is certainly capable of sub-8:20, Cherono and Kibiwot are sub 8:25. Dibaba and Teferi are almost certainly capable of 8:25 this year.
American Record is 8:25.83 set 7 Sep 1985 in Rome.

Dibaba has a personal best of 8:16.6 which she ran indoors. I give her the edge.

But I don't think anyone will run under 8:20 and I don't think that the American record will be broken. -
Ayana is capable of sub-8. She was holding back in Beijing big time.
-
No American records. Jet lag. Ethiopians will dissapoint as well due to jet lag.
Jet lag is a big factor here. Very big. -

The splits on her last three laps got slower and slower.
You are wrong there. -

Do you understand what "holding back" means? It seems you do not. -
NO American Records. Americans are too timid, too scared to jump out front, set a blistering pace. The past Worlds re-emphasized that. American runners who race on the world stage sit in the back, run a high schoolers pace then sprint the last 100m. Ive lost respect for these folks. Fans pay hundreds, thousands of dollars to travel and watch the races just to see these folks jogging around the track slow enough for a high schooler to run until the last 100m. its appawling!

Haha sub 8?! There's no way she's gonna average like 4:15 pace for 3k...that's 63 and change per lap, the world record for the mile is 4:12 by the way. I think she's capable of something towards like 8:10-8:15 at her best, but no way is she going sub 8.
-
The WR for the mile is now equivelent to around 4:07 due to Dibab's 3:50 1500 where she negative split the race and closed in 1:59/2:00 showing she could crushed the world best in the Mile.

14:10 5k (which is plausible for the 2 Ethiopians) = 8:03 for 3k, according to McMillan. Hmmmm...
I really don't think they're going to be close to 8. Sub 8:20 would be good. But those two really have been impressive. It's possible the WR could go soon, if not at Zurich then sometime next year. -

No one cares.
Too little, too late.
If they had any cajones, we would have seen that at WC -
What time is this CT?

I don't think so. Why would any of the Americans have set a fast pace at WC's? None of the Americans could have run away from the rest of the competition a la Rudisha... -

East to West? How is jet lag a problem? -

if the pace is 8:20, look for rowbury and simpson to be up in the pack for at least 2k, maybe holding on for high 8:20s.
if the pace is 8:15 or faster, I think 8:10 is in jeopardy with ayana's strength and dibaba's speed. one of them will probably have a good day.
i'm betting on Ayana to take the win, even though Genzeba should be better at 3000 in theory -
this race may be too soon after peking 5k for 2 top ethiopians & genze had some ?blisters
anyhows, if they do go for it, it will be very interesting how close they get to sonia's 2k wr of 5'25.36 en route
( that is 8'08.04 pace )
there is an outside chance sonia's wr coud go
the question is :
will iaaf ratify it if they do break it ? -
A one hour time difference between Ethiopia and Zurich. Yup, that's gonna hurt.
-
They can set a record enroute if they set up the cameras at the 2k mark.
Zurich is just far too close to the Championships nowadays, particularly when the athletes have to travel multiple time zones to get there, to get the great, great times they used to run there--maybe in the sprints or jumps. Why not hold it one week after? We've recently seen a run of disappointing times as athletes just cash in after championships. Back in the day, though, there were some very notable performances, such as Morceli's wr's.
