Go to 2minutes in, "The last quarter was 49 seconds."
This should put the debate about his kick in this race to rest. His talent transcends eras!

I still don't understand the logic behind the people on here who say Ryun's the GOAT miler. Can someone explain please?

His summer of 1967 shape was better than anyone before or since.

All that proves is that Ryun is not a reliable source of what he did. Or else he has a poor memory.
A serious and analytical poster on here has the race on video, and it was 50.6 using ht and the clock displayed on the screen.
49 is nonsense.

Or it proves he has a good memory.
An olympic runner wrote this after the meet. I'm sure Ryun heard about it.

No, said 50.5.

You never think that Newspaper Claimed facts are wrong?
T&FN had it at 50.6. The guy with the video also stated 50.6

I never said that.

Again, he said 50.5.
http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?board=1&thread=5070489&id=5241086#5241086Since he won't avail himself of fair use privileges and show at least the last lap in its entirety, or even simply Ryun crossing the line with 1 lap to go, how can we trust what said88 posts?
I would like to see the entire race. Surely there is some way to obtain this from a publisher?
What makes a great athlete is the ability to perform the best when it counts the most. Think Carl Lewis, Jordan, Slater. Clutch performers! Ryun on the other hand, lacked the ability to rise to occasion and bring his immense talent to the big meets.
The race was slow.
Why would anyone want to see it.

Okay, first off, what proof is there that his shape that summer was better than anyone else ever?
And even if he was in better shape than anyone else that summer, one summer doesn't make one the GOAT.
Big race. Brings his B game! wrote:

And who defines when it counts?
The olympics is one meet. Big friggin deal. Setting a WR is much more impressive.

Yes it does.

I'm sure plenty of posters, including myself, would like to see the entire since it is not widely available. This was Ryun at his best!

Exactly. "When it counted" Pekka Vasala man-handled Keino. Vasala is hardly a lsgend. Ryun had a lopsided won loss record against Keino. The only way Keino could beat him is 7500' altitude. EOT.
Keino beat him once in 1968 and to keinos credit, he ran brilliantly.
1972 Ryun was tripped in the heats and no reinstated (travesty). Ryun would've medaled in 1972 and beat Keino in the process.
Shattered the world record in the mile (which stood for 8 years) and the 800.
Not a championship racer? Please. Silver medalist, multiple USA, NCAA, high school championships.

http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?board=1&thread=5070489&id=5241086#5241086Deanouk--could any other runner in history go through 1100 meters in 2:47.7 (3:02.9 pace for 1200 meters) and then run 400 meters in 50.5 seconds?
This is surely beyond the abilities of all other great milers ever to compete in this event, no?
Guys have managed 8 seconds faster than Ryun's best so yes, there are quite a few who could have.
From the ever growing list of talented US milers without Olympic gold, is Ryun the best you Yanks can offer up?
Coe had more Olympic 1500m gold medals than all US milers combined!
And all the wild speculation as to conversions of Ryun's times from cinder tracks, don't bother. He ran on all-weather tracks plenty of times and ran no faster!
It's ironic that every top US miler to come through was touted to do well at Olympic level, except the one who did, Manzano!
Manzano has the Olympic hardware of Ryun, Scott, Falcon, Spivey, Hollman, Webb, and Centrowitz COMBINED!
As noted earlier in the thread, the olympics is one meet. Its importance is overrated.
Setting a world record, or being number one over the entire season, or multiple seasons in a row, is more impressive.
See above.
I reject the premise of your assertion. That is, your characterization of such discussion as wild speculation. It is not.
Indeed; as a shadow of his former self. He was done after 1968, and even that year was a far cry off his form from the previous year.
Leo earning a silver = did well
but
Glen Cunningham and Jim Ryun earning silver = did not do well
?
Which tells you something about how meaningful an olympic medal is when rating one's career, that is, not very.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
