I'm guessing that Brennan, with his experience, understood quite well the problem with this strategy...
The problem is that he is no longer the fastest 400m runner...
He now has to hope that "someone else" keeps the pace honest and he can out kick the top 5 guys when they are not fresh.
He won many times with the old sit and kick strategy. It's now over for him. Not that the other guys are really much better. He has simply slowed down. I'm guessing that he retires this year or next year.
