Has anyone gone from being in the middle of the pack to consistently placing top 10-15 in races if not better or know anyone who has done this?

When I was in 7th grade I was more of a near-the-front kind of guy, with my best place in a cross country meet with more than 100 people being 11th. I also ran a really good race and placed 26th out of 250 runners, but that was probably my best race of the season.
Then, my 8th grade year I became more serious about running and focused a lot in the summer on mileage and tactics. I then placed 6th out of 250 in that big race, and placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in every other race besides state
I didn't get to race at conferences or regionals my FR of HS in track because I wasn't in the top 4 in any event on my team. I finished 5th at XC finals in my division my SO year and won regionals in the 3200m in track.
This year I ran an 18 flat for my 5k during xc season. About 2 weeks after track ended I ran a 5k with a solid 16 as a result of cutting out long runs and doing speed work only. I also cut a 43 minute 10k down to a 38 in 2 months on trails with no real training for it other than the speedwork after tracks

3kmeters,
You improved because you matured and you kept doing some kind of training not because of the type of training you did.
Yes, I did this after my freshman year. I went from 40 some odd mpw during track to nine 90 mile weeks that summer. It was not the easiest or safest way to do it but it worked.
